sparky Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 hi all, i'm doing an oil and filter change today. i think i've got everything covered. spent about 2 months planning this. got the haynes manual, the oil and filter, even got some spark plugs, (going to do them at the same time.) i'm just wondering if anyone has got any tips on things not to do, before i get cracking on this. yes, i'v ebeen biking for a while, but i've never done this before. thought it was time to get started. Anthony Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 make sure the bike is warm, oil comes out easily, then when you take the sump nut out, leave if for an hour to drain (obv on flat ground), this makes sure the majority of the oil is out. While your doing that, fit plugs, inspect the old ones for signs of bad fueling (back of haynes manual will help). Take filter off after a good hour of the sump nut coming off. After servicing, go over your bike and cheack every thing is in good order clean and lube chain etc and then happy biking Quote
firestorm Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 few tips:Make sure you have the right tools to do the job.Oil filter is the correct one, check before removing old one.correct oil type and viscocity. semi or fully synthetic. Also a replacement copper washer for the drain plug, not essential but I always change this when doing the oil.Warm oil before draining...smear the rubber seal on the new filter with a drop of new oil before fitting, gives a better seal.Hope this helps.. bex Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 full kettle of water, so you can have a quick and constant supply of hot tea, cos its cold out there and your going to be there a short while lol, other than that take your time and make sure you tighten everything at the end, also take this time to check all over the bike. TC Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Loosen the oil filter and sump plug (Just crack the seal) before you warm the engine up. Its easier to get off then without burning your hands. If you don't want oil all over your downpipes when taking the filter off wrap some kitchen foil over them. Then as everyone else has said. Especailly the TeaOh and get a funnel to help with pouring the oil in the bike. Quote
firestorm Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 So, how did it go, any problems or did you just drink yourself silly on tea? Quote
Ingah Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Hope he remembered to put the sump plug back in before pouring in the new oil.I'm not obviously talking from experience am i? Quote

sparky Posted December 13, 2010 Author Posted December 13, 2010 susie, thanks for moving this. you'd think after lurking on these pages for so long i'd know where everythign goes.as it turned out, i didn't do it yesterday. g/f suggested that doing it just before i needed the bike to travel to work when there were no shops open to help out was a bad idea. it'll have to wait until next saturday.thanks for the advice guys, i'll make sure i keep the kettle warm!!
