From a shop / Ebay / other internet site.

You should check the bulb first though as it may be the switch is shot - To check, identify the wires to it (if you cannot, then you'll need to remove the bulb). Disconnect wires/remove bulb and attach either an ohmeter or bulb checker (essentially a 6v battery) across the bulb contact - If the ohmeter does not read anything sensible (should be less than 10K Ohms but NOT Zero (short circuit)) or, with the tester, it does not glow (dim), then it is shot. If bulb OK - Check the switch or cabling.

Behind the sprocket cover is a circular doo dar with a wire coming out of it that goes to the neutral indicator bulb.

On the inside of the circular doo dar is a contact connected to the wire.

When you change gear, another contact rotates round behind the circular doo dar and they meet only when the bike is in neutral. It should be clean because it is sealed, they may not be making proper contact.

You can buy a gismo that has 6 contacts ( one for each gear ) that replaces the circular doo dar , connected to a seven segment LED display mounted next to your speedo and hey presto a nice shiny light that tells you what gear you're in.

Mine's been broken since I bought it last July, the problem is that the cable to the switch thingy came loose and caught on the drive sprocket, wearing away the cable. I ought to get round to fixing it but it doesn't really bother me.
