A while back I stated that my wheel gets stuck in rotation, as if you put the break on. It was decided that the disk was probably warped. Today though I looked down at the front wheel on my way into town (not a very safe or dignified looking thing to do). Anyway, the front wheel is wobbling, so i don't think its the disk that warped, but something wrong with the wheel or forks.

Here is the situation. I bought this bike in knowledge that the top part of the front forks have been replaced, along with the housing for the clocks. This shows it has been in a an accident. The bottom part of the forks are the originals as well as the wheel. Could it be possible that something was not aligned properly when put back on? Or is something definitely bent? If so how do i check what is bent. Wheels or forks? And if forks, how do i tell if its just one, or both?

Final question, if something is bent, can i get it straightened out, or am i going to have to buy a replacement?

Sorry for all the questions, I don't particually want to ask at a garage as they are likely to tell me the whole lot needs replacing at a cost of more than the bike is worth... thieving...

If the front wheel is wobbling and the forks aren't, it's the wheel bearings. Soon sorted    . If the head bearings are worn , you will feel a click as you pull bike forward and backward while holding the front brake on. Bit more involved and about £70 to £100 at a bike shop.

correct me if im wrong, but if the head bearings were the problem, wouldnt it wobble when stopped?

Sorry if I didnt make it clear, but when stopped, it doesnt move from side to side, but when moving it looks asthough it wobbles because i dont think its straight. - not sure if even thats clear lol

Buckled wheel?

Take wheel out, take it to bike shop for balancing ... soon find out ...

If theres no play in the front wheel when stationary but it looks like its wobbling when riding then it sounds like a buckled wheel or bent front spindle. Does the wheel look like its wobbling side to side or forwards to back?

Doesn't sound like head bearings to me.

I think the wheels buckled then. Do what Dan said. Take the wheel and get it balanced.

When you've taken the wheel off check the bearings as you might as well with it off. The inner race should spin/turn smoothly and freely.

ok, thanks guys. Does anyone know if it is possible to get them repaired? Or will i need a replacement?

They can be repaired, up to a point, by Motoliner. Probs cheaper to buy a one off eBay!!!

pfffffft from £55? yea, I can get one off ebay with a tyre and front disk for £65. The disks seem to be going from around £20 anyway, and that way i would have a spare tyre and disk. Also wouldn't have to pay for tyre fitting lol. Sounds like the better option. Now just need to save save save.. ffs!

Don't you have centre stand? Put your bike on stand, put some weight on back and spin front wheel so you'll see if its buckled :thumb:

I've been a bit busy on Sunday, but other than that I'm everyday on here lol 8-)

So when you spin your wheel you should see what is damaged when you have a really close look

Hi

Like someone else has mentioned if you have a centre stand get someone to put load on the rear of the bike so there is no load on the front wheel and it is off the ground. (If they can hold the bars straight and secure too) it will help

Then grab the wheel like the images below

Move the wheel towards and away from you, basically in a way the wheel is not supposed to move. (Push your left arm away from you and your right arm towards you)

Do you feel or see any movement from the centre of the wheel? If so then the wheel bearing is fluffed/or the spindle is badly worn

If you feel no movement then the chances are the wheel is buckled, to check this you would really need a DTI gauge and check the wheel has no more than 5mm run out, DO NOT look at the front wheel from the front of the bike and spin it, the tyre may give you the impression the wheel is buckled, a rule of thumb is the cheaper the tyre the more likely it is to give the impression the wheel is buckled.

If the wheel bearing is hanging then you may have done further damage to your front disc and warped it slightly. Even though the pistons would move in and out with the side to side movement of the wheel it will still put unwanted pressure on the disc.

Hope this helps

No movement. Buckled wheel me thinks then :(

Are you looking at the tyre or the wheel rim when you ride? Could be a bulge in the tyre sidewall perhaps??

Just a thought

If you havent got a dti gauge, not the usual DIYer tool I know,

A "Kerbside Mtrs" way of checking is to get a ruler and hold it securely against one of the forks and butt it up to the rim edge. Then spin the wheel slowly, if you see a gap appear or the wheel tries to push on the ruler then you know its fluffed.
