CBR1000RR4 Charging Problems

Anyone know anything about bike electronics?

My bike has just died on me out on the road, put a new battery in it, died again some time later. Got recovered and:

- Tested charging voltage at battery: 11.5v > So its not charging then.

- Undertook haynes manuals testing of grounds: OK

- Undertook haynes manuals testing of resistances: OK

So thinking its the reg/rec or the stator.

I want to check the output from the alternator, this is 3 phase so I thought you could just put your multimeter to V(AC) and jab the probes in to each pair of stator wires in the connector and look for similar numbers but:

the numbers I am getting are only 1.8V from two pairs and 0V from the third. So does that mean the stator is buggered?

Also thought I would get 50V(AC)+. Is there a more complicated circuit to me be made before you can test the alternator output?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received..

James

P.S. Anyone know anything bad about electrex alternators and reg/recs?

it's a honda! it'll be the reg/rec!

common problem!

there are several threads on this already

I think.

does the fact that I get different numbers from one of the pairs from the stator not mean that the stator may be gone too?

My rr4 never recovered from my electrical problem, I had a new alternator and it was found later a shaft in the engine was to fault and was apparantly stiff when it should have been loose so was causing the damage so I got shut.

However I dont know about these things and as far as electrics go imo it could be owt.

Hope your problem isnt too bad!

Rennie says yes, quite possibly! :)

Stator? alternator?

I was told no patent parts so had to source a second hand one a new honda one was £500!

Does sound like the stature is shot, by your description and assuming you tested correctly. I used electrex for pattern stator for my triumph, no probe.

Megawatt is a blade guru however, he should be along shortly:.

Best of luck.

RR4s to RR7s had alternator problems, some of which sorted under warranty, but you may be too late with an RR4. I'll ask my Blade guru and get back to ya. You may need to remind me later, I'm on nights

Should check each yellow wire to earth, about 60 to 70 volts on each phase. Output from reg/rec should be about 14.7 to 14.9 volts.

Hi all,

Just to finish this thread off, it was both the R/R and Stator in the end.

Took the bike into the garage to find this out unfortunately as I didn't realise how easy the stator was to replace. Changed out the R/R with a Electrex one but this didn't cure it so changed out the Stator to find that the old stator had a busted phase shorting to the engine case, this had then screwed the R/R too..

Both Electrex products seem good, problem solved. But don't both getting a garage to do it, buy both bots, change the R/R and if that doesn't work change the stator too. If it does then you ca take the stator back. Easy job.
