Hey guys

I am nearly 20 year old and have never ridden before but plan on getting a 125 cc motorcycle, I had my CBT today, during the first 3 hours during training I had trouble keeping the bike at a constant speed, my instructor wanted me to use the rear break to control speed while keeping the throttle and clutch at biking point. After struggling with it, instructor suggested me to drop down to a scooter so I wouldn’t have to worry about the clutch.

After spending around 2 hours on the scooter, it was time for the instructor to take us on the road but told me to finish for today since I was still struggling with riding in the yard. He suggested me to practice on a two wheeler at a private land (not possible) or on a push bike and come back in a week.

Personally I thought I had improved quite a bit in the 6 hours I have spent on a two wheeler, and all I want is some time to practice riding it, but with £130 I only get a day of CBT and 2 extra hours. After that I need to pay £60 for each 2 hours.

Do you guys think by investing in a push bike and practising on it, it would help my riding?

Or is there somewhere I can practice on a two wheeler without paying so much?

No I do not think a cycle would help at all as it is not as if you could not balance on two wheels. I would suggest you try taster lessons at any school that will give them. I had one for an hour, it was free and it helped before my CBT.

I had a taster session before my CBT as well and it really helped. Although it was £30 for an hour so just the same as you paying £60 for another 2 hours really.

I wouldn't be too disheartened - you're not the only person who didn't finish their CBT in one day, however yours did seem quite expensive!

Many training schools also offer the second session free if they think you should go back on another day.

I had similar problems with the slow riding/balanced riding & Rennie took me to a car park with a pushbike to practise U turns & figure 8's & it helped tremendously!

I wouldn't go out & buy a pushbike but yes, borrow one & practise the slow riding - you might well fid it does help!

This is what my instructor did, you paid a £120 flat fee for your cbt- regardless of how long it took.

OP: re Throttleds suggestion, have a look at the GetOn website its through them that many schools offer a free taster session.

Thanks for the replies guys

I did do the 1 hour free taster session it definitely helped since I wasn’t stalling during CBT etc.

My main problem is been clutch control, hopefully I will be able to get it sorted next time I go for CBT.

The only thing does bother me is how expensive this is, when I called to re book my session I was told I had around a day or so left, after that I would have to pay £130 again and imagine how annoying it becomes when your instructor goes off for 20-30 mins to deal with other customers during the session!

do it again :P

My local place lets you do it as much as you want I think. There was an example that two girls did it 5 times there efore doing their test. I think they get paid by the government or someone for each session they do, so they are making money so it doesnt bother them. But e sure to do it via the school rather than geton, because geton will only put the aplication through once per email address you give.

Try shopping around mate - when I did my CBT (£80) I was told it was a flat fee, and if I had to come back another day because I wasn't ready for the on road part there would be no further charge. From what I've heard, quite a few schools operate on this basis.

They may give you an extra day if you aren't ready to be let loose but at the end of the day if still aren't ready they do have a business to run and costs to cover etc. I'm sure you'll get it soon enough, it takes some longer than others and once you're on two wheels it'll be worth it :) I still doubt I'm ready sometimes and I passed DAS a year ago!
