eastanglianbiker Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 is it the starter motor or the starter solinoid near the battery thats just clicking, sounds like u have got water in somewhere Quote
steve s Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 i think its the starter ,but will have another look Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 give it a tap with something see if that makes it work also check battery is fully charged as that will make it just click if batery is flat Quote
steve s Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 did that ,didnt help so i have removed the battery ill get it checked tomorrow.can i tell if its duff battery or the bikes not charging ?.when i pressed the start button the lights went out ,would this happen if the battery was ok ? Quote
crowther7689 Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Recently had this exact problem. Turned out to be dead battery. When hooked up for a charge, and it was obviously flat, it would only do a maintance charge, rather than a full charge, and still be totally flat afterwards. Quote
Guest akey Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 Get a voltmeter accross the terminals, should be above 12.5vWhen the bike is running with battery fitted check the voltage and reve the bike to 2 or 3k and you should see 13-14v on the meter Quote
steve s Posted June 28, 2011 Author Posted June 28, 2011 thanks for that .its been fine up to this evening .Well ill get it checked tomorrow ,a new one s only £20 odd so nothing disastrous ,just means that i will have to go to work in the car (no fun in that) Quote
steve s Posted June 29, 2011 Author Posted June 29, 2011 its going again, had battery checked and it was fine .the mechanic said it was the starter motor and i was too give it a tap or two with a hammer and it worked he said it will need a bit of a clean so ill look into that but its on the bike to work tomorrow rather than the car so all is well with the world Quote
Tango Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Could be the brushes sticking in the starter motor then. Pull it out and give the inside a good blast with compressed air. Dunno if the brushes are replaceable on that. Check the manual and see. May need a new set of brushes if they are too worn.Bob Quote
mealexme Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 its going again, had battery checked and it was fine .the mechanic said it was the starter motor and i was too give it a tap or two with a hammer and it worked he said it will need a bit of a clean so ill look into that but its on the bike to work tomorrow rather than the car so all is well with the world its good you have it sorted, but i would have thought if the lights were dimming when starting it up, then you would have a battery problem. Maybe thats the next thing to go, see if you can charge it before it completely looses its power Quote
steve s Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 thanks all,it started on the button this morning and again leaving work but it wouldn't start when i got home well until i hit it with a hammer ,perhaps she likes it rough.have ordered a manual so when it comes its the first job ill do .thanks again for all the advice n comments .Steveps .i love my little bike Quote
Tango Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 I used to have a Rover V8 that would start OK when cold.....but the starter wouldn't work when hot unless I crawled under the car and welted it with a big screwdriver or whatever. And that was cured by stripping the starter motor, cleaning it out and replacing the brushes. So if this is what's happening with your bike...... Quote
