Have bought a 1998 CG 125 for my daughter and it is a great little bike. The only problem is that it doesn't have a side stand which makes getting off and putting it on the centre stand a bit of a skill!!

I've heard that there aren't standard side stands for these because there's no provision to fit a cut-off switch but I've seen kits with footpegs and sidestand on ebay fairly cheaply.

Does anyone have any experience of these?

Do you think it's a good idea to have a side stand without a safety cut-off or is she better off just developing a good technique?

BTW, for future tinkering, any suggestions for brighter headlights, drum to disc brake conversions etc...

Many thanks

Hi Mandy :)

My YBR doesn't have a sidestand either and apparently Yamaha don't make one (older & newer models have them! ) but the guy at the workshop doing my service at the moment is (hopefully) making one from another bike fit onto mine.

I asked him if it was a requirement for it to be wired up to a cut-off switch and he said no. So it I'll just have to be careful!!!

Either that or you will hit it when going around the first left hand corner you find and end up nearly hitting a car on the other side of the road... not that I am speaking from experience :angel12:

Not a requirement, but a lot of people have had bad accidents because of forgotten sidestands. I,m sure we could sort summat out for it. Where are you and is the bike going to the rally?

Who me or Bonniebird?? :? My YBR is going to the Rally providing it's not p*ssing it down!

Bike won't be at the rally I'm afraid as me and Bob (Tango) have managed to get the weekend to ourselves!

Rhiannon's used to just a centre stand because of her scooter but I think it would be a useful addition. She nearly dropped it in the 6th form car park this morning apparently when struggling with the centre stand (1st trip to school). Some guy laughed at her so she's a bit embarrassed!!

I symathise with her completely Mandy!! I don't worry about putting it ON th stand but absolutely HATE having to get my bike off the centrestand!! Especially on the slight upward slopeof our drive!!

Spoke to the guy at the workshop today & he's adapting an old one from a bandit to fit my bike - hopefully with a spring return!

Me and my dad made one once. 13mm tubular steel welded onto a steel plate, cut it at an angle so that it sat on the metal plate and held the bike at the right angle.

You need a hole drilled for it to pivot and attach to the bike and it needs a small hole a little further down for a spring to go.

I think there are DIY sites on the internet showing how it can be done :)

Halogen bulb available from halfords. Made the world of difference on my bike. Disk brake conversion would entail finding a bike thats been written off from beihind and buying the whole front end then replacing the current one with that along with the steering head bearings.

Only other option would be to source a right leg stanchion, front wheel, caliper, mmaster cylinder, hoses and put it all together. I'm not sure if the forks are spaced the same drum to disk so no guarantee that would work..

Think a halogen bulb would be a good idea. Perhaps I won't worry too much about discs then. She's not complained about the brakes, its only because me and Tango are used to discs. I had drum brakes years ago on a 100cc Honda and didn't think twice about them.

She's getting used to putting the bike on the centre stand but I still think I'll get a side stand kit, maybe rig up a light or buzzer to it

The problem with Halogen bulbs is the filaments tend to be more fragile as they glow hotter giving more light. So some bikes that vibrate a lot will go through bulbs very quickly if Halogens are fitted and particularly if the Super White or HID style bulbs are used.
