wannars125 Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Are they safe? I'm considering getting one as I've got a £50 voucher for the local bike shop and with the impending trip round Europe, I figured it might be a worthy investment. Also, if they get wet, do they take very long to dry out? Quote
Guest akey Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I have a Fieldsheer Mach1 mesh jacket, had it for about 4 years now and its still in good shape despite being used off road and all sorts.I cant really comment on the safety as I have only had slow speed spills off road. That said I trust it as much as my Draggin Jeans and wore it for my trip to spain last year. The jacket drys alot quicker than any other jacket I have, but that said in the rain, the rain just pours through it (as you would expect).Depending on how meshy the jacket is (mine is all mesh) will depend on how much you get to wear it in the UK, it needs to be over about 20 deg c for me to wear it. PhatDad Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I've got one and it came with a waterproof over jacket that fits in a pocket on the back of the mesh jacket in case it rains. It dries really quickly as it's just two layers of the mesh for most of the jacket apart from where the pads are. The are contained in small pockets and have a full material part on the outside. I had a minor 20-30mph accident in it where I was able to roll as I came off the bike and it's grazed part of that material on the elbow but stood up to it. Might have been different had I slid along the road. Quote
TC Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 So basically everyone on here that has got one. Has falllen off their bike I've heard they can get cold if you do any type of long speeds in the uk, which puts me off getting one. Quote

Early mornings for me are a killer on the bike in a mesh jacket. I usually wear a hoody underneath to help somewhat but come the ride home in the sun it makes the mornings pain worth while. Quote
Guest akey Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Yea but in my defence I did wear mine racing a C90 off road Agree with PD they can be a bit cold in the morning but a thin windproof is usually enough. When it does get hot, they are superb jacket though as the slightest movement and it feels like riding a bike in a tee shirt Quote
wannars125 Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 Sounds like the kind of thing I'd need. I'm just a little worried about how much I'll overheat in the south of Europe in a few weeks time! Quote
Guest akey Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 Mesh jacket is perfect for that, as I said I wore mine all day for 5 days during the trip to spain as it was perfect. Quote
Guest Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 I've a summer mesh jacket.... nice to feel the wind blow through and cool you down on a hot day.....wearing it on a not so warm day........ Bbrrrrrrrrrr. Definatly a good investment, esp if you feel the heat! Quote
Remy Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I've got the same jacket as Ruthie, it's brilliant in hot weather but if it turns a bit cold you soon notice the difference! Quote
wannars125 Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 One of my housemates has a mesh jacket (I hadn't noticed before) so I gave it a go the other day when it was scorchio outside! Must say that I found it good at low speed but once I was up to about 35mph that amount of air it let in was comparable to my normal textile jacket without the lining and all the air vents open...Think I'll be investing in a tank bag with my vouchers instead! Is that not what you would want? My textile jacket feels too warm in traffic and find at speed it works better as the air gets around me. I tried a Spada Airflow on and it felt very solid just like any other textile jacket. I liked the waterproof it comes with as well.http://www.spadaclothing.co.uk/productd ... roduct=110 Quote
wannars125 Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 I only ride for fun now really so most of the time I'm above 35mph so it doesn't really seem worth it to me. Maybe if I was still commuting then it would be worth it. I'm hoping that on my travels I won't have too much slow riding!I also feel the cold quite a lot so it would have to be over 25C here for me to wear it which doesn't seem to happen that much.I think the tank bag will be of more use to me. Guest Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 yeah warner, they are absolutely safe. You should have one if you own a sports bike and loves to ride it fast. Right now i am having EXL red black coloured meshsports bike jacket which i bought nearly 2 and a half year back and still it looks like new. In addition to safety, it looks cool on bike riders, impressing a girl will not be a tough job. Quote
