Swiss Rolls Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 my head gasket has gone on my bike, it cant go to a garage, cant afford it. I have done many things on this bike but nothing as big as this.I understand how to do it, my friend has the tools, and his dad used to be a rally mechanic so i will manage.just wondering if anyone who has done theirs themselves, how it went for them? and trouble they run into and things i should watch out for, also, should i bother taking the engine out or not?also, do the cams need setting back up or if i put it back how i found it will it be ok? megawatt Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 easy job mate, buy a Haynes manual and look on Youtube. Shouldn't need engine out , depending on what bike. Just remove bits in the way rather than struggle. Set crank n cam timing marks before removing and always turn crank clockwise when rebuilding. If you have a problem ASK!!! If you get it wrong, it could be expensive! Quote
Stu Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 first of all you cant get a haynes for your bike but head over to zxrworld and get a manual from there its pretty easy to do i would change your cam chain too while your at it they are known for stretching on the zxr put the engine at TDC count the links on the timing chain at certain points and check the markings on the cam personally i would get the engine out as it makes working on it easier Quote
Swiss Rolls Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 didn't think about anything other than the head gasket so cheers for saying cam chain also i know this is a silly question but...... bare with me.......It is fine to ride as long as i keep topping the radiator up, but it is deffo HG (oil in coolant, white smoke on startup sometimes and obvs overheating) if i keep topping the radiator up and riding it very gently (never above half revs) what are the chances of expensive damage being done, as i have absolutely no other transport to work and wont be able to do the work for another weekend or so :/shit scenario i know Quote
Stu Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Yet may get away with it but if it dumps the water in to the sump your screwed yet could seize the motor The cam doesn't need to be done but may as well while its apart Quote
Swiss Rolls Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 my insureance company woke me up this morning offering me full breakdown and courtesy bike and compensated travel and all that BS, given the above circumstance i agreed ha Quote
