mealexme Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 So the new exhaust is AWESOME! Its a little noisy though, and I live next to other houses obviously, however, I go to work at half 9pm and get back before 7am which means the noise could be an issue, especially on those nights its (rarely) hot enough to have the windows open. I do live on a hill though, so turning the engine off at the top and coasting down would be ideal becaue I dont want to be an inconssiderate twat, however what would it do to the engine? Especially if it was done on a reguler basis? It cant be good for it, but is it bad? Would it make it more likely for the engine to sieze, or make it harder to start when I go to work, or is it 100% safe and not goin to damage the engine or anything in the slightest? Quote
rushwind Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 if you mean not starting the engine til u r down the hill? and rolling in neutral?that wont do any harm, although coasting is wrong , as you dont have full control, i dont spose you/ld be pulled for it Quote
mealexme Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 i mean on the way home but yea. coasting with the engine off. how is it not being in control? the brakes still work and being a steep hill I would be dining an prospectu speed. I can just say it broke down Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 as long as it is in neutral u cn coast as far as you want but even with noisy exhaust using engine braking downhill gives you more control than no engine running at all Quote
davefly76 Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I wouldn't worry about it. The times you said aren't that early/late that there aren't going to be other people awake. Obviously you need to be considerate to your neighbours so I wouldn't rev the engine excessively. I certainly wouldn't turn off the engine and coast down, as someone said you don't have full control of the bike and you won't have the benefits of engine braking. Quote

Ninereeds Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 unless your exhaust is deafeningly loud (which it shouldnt be as it would be illegal) then i wouldnt worry too much about waking people up. dont scream away from your house getting upto 9k revs asap, but take it easy obviously.my neighbor has an old porsche carrera that sounds like a tractor when he starts it, its by no means quiet but it has never woken me up in the morning even though its less than 15m from my window and both windows are open. And no, im not a heavy sleeper.if youre that bothered, leave it running outside your house then quickly run in and see what it sounds like from inside your house. that will tell you what it sounds like to the neighbors. get back to the bike before some bar steward rides it away. (or make sure its locked up before doing this) Quote
TC Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I regularly turn mine off before i get to our house if i'm arriving in the early hours, You're not going to be doing any speed really and the brakes and steering will still work. Quote

I can just say it broke down you can say it just broke down, , but yould still be coasting , and not in full control because you cant drive out of any situation that occurs without restarting, and that takes time,,,,thats the view of the law, I,m not saying u shouldnt do it, the idea is commendable Quote
mealexme Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 yea, about it being illegal... You know that crappy excuse people use that their baffle "fell" out of the exhaust? Well mines up on Dartmoor somewhere. I only did the bolt up finger tight, thinking it would be tight enough just to ride a couple of miles home. Oh how I was wrong! Quote
