Guest Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Hi all, just done the unthinkable and killed a Honda CGengine will turn overthumb over spark plug hole tells me there is compressionthere is a sparkPosible diagnoses: broken woodruff key, allowing timing to slip.Water in the carb, coil breaking down. (although none of these would account for the smell)Engine will start but only on full throttle and then runs very poorlyFailure occured after "traffic light drag racing" i turned off at the lights, 20 metres later throttle actuation has no effect on engine rpm and a foul smell is present.Essentially i'm a skint student with basic mechanical knowledge and a distinct lack of tools looking for some pointers. The motorcycle in question is a 2005 Honda CG125 (electric start/ front disk brake)I would be grateful for any serious input. eastanglianbiker Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 if you think it might be the timing slipping then remove the left hand casing and see if you can turn the rotor by hand without the engine turning then if it isnt thats not the problem if you say it now smells like burnt metal you could of damaged the big end or main bearings on the crankshaft Quote
mealexme Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 I'm no mechanic, but sounds to me like a clogged fuel line or possibly a hole in the fuel like somewhere. is the smell petrol?if not I give up lol Quote
Adam Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Have you checked your engine oil recently? It's always best to start with the easy things! Quote
GazW Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 It's never the end of the world either pal, I bought an engine off eBay for a cg125 swapped it over and sold the broken one as spares & repairs for £50. Quote
pointblank0 Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Could be a stuck float in the carb maybe? Quote
Guest Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Update.... Spent the day with the engine out of the bike in pieces, eventually check the carburettor.... the pilot jet had fallen out. I enclose pictures for your amusement Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 expensive lesson learned to check simple things first but it looks like you had fun Quote
Guest Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Fun might be a slight exaggeration, but i learnt a lot about how she fits together which is always a bonus, up to now my mechanical knowledge was limited to cars and 2 stroke crossers Quote
