mackemforever Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 In the last few weeks my clutch cable has become increasingly sticky feeling and it's now just about impossible to get anything near smooth operation on it, so I'm going to have to do the job that I've been putting off for a while and oil my clutch cable.Just wanted to get an opinion about what is the best lubricant to use, both in terms of how good it is and value for money.Thanks. Matt Strange Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 I disconnect the cable and tie a plastic bag with a bit of engin oil in it over the end. Then tip it up carefully Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 get yourself one of these at this price and should make less mess http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Cla ... 19d4b8af3c Quote
argentum40 Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 might seem like a daft question but i have one of those cable oilers and have no idea how you use it... so how do you use it ??.. Quote
megawatt Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 If it's that bad , you should replace it. They are usually lined with ptfe, so don't need lubricating. In the past I have used 3in1, hang cable vertically by the inner nipple, make a plasticene funnel and drip 3in1 into it until it comes out at the bottom. Quote
mackemforever Posted September 7, 2012 Author Posted September 7, 2012 Went for the "bag of oil over the end and leave until oil drips through" method and it does seem to have made a hell of a difference, gone from jerky as hell to silky smooth. Quote
Colin the Bear Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 By the time it starts to seize, as yours has, there's probably a deal of rusting of the inner cable. I'd be getting a replacement now while it still works and putting it on the shelf for when it goes. Lubrication of all moving parts should be on your schedule and done regularly. Quote
dave8204 Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 ACF50,brilliant stuff.Though personally as someone else said I'd replace the cable, use my bike every day and broken cables can spoil your day, something else I found out the hard way. Quote
