i had a similar problem with a scooter a while back i had to fill it right up to the top with petrol and then it seemd to start ok like it had a vacum lock in it somewhere but i would also make sure its getting 2 sroke oil into it as well because if it isnt then you will wreck this barrel as well

The carb setting was left after it idled well at 1500 RPM so I doubt it could be that I'm not ruling it out though =/

Well them bolts and washers haven't arrived yet so It's basically running with 3 bolts and not 4 but it did work then it didn't?

Well....it worked for a while....but could have blown past the head gasket now.....worth checking around that area.....

As EAB says....if your running too rich it'll foul the plug in no time...... If you pull the plug out and it's wet you're getting something into the combustion chamber.....now if it's the right stuff is another matter.

Are you sure that the bottom end of the motor was alright after the devastation in the top end? Haven't knackered the main bearings?

I've looked at bottom end rebuild and what it entails and it just looks ridiculous even in something like mine, and one bearing can stop it changing gear I wouldn't know where to start and there i no step by step tutorials on my engine =/

What sorts of troubleshooting tests can I do to rule various things out?

before trying anything else i would wait untill the nut and washers get there and fit them and see what happens other wise you are going to wend up chucking money at it when you might not need to

Sorry Computer didn't update everyone's posts, I'll wait for them to come, they've only just been allocated -_- I'll fit them on as soon as I have them, thanks for all your help and advice =)

have you checked the compression? even a finger test would be better than nothing

Yeah, I had my finger over it and it seemed dead good when I try and bump start it in first the bike damn near doesn't move as well surely that's good?

There is XR6 workshop manuals all over the net you need to look again :)

My dad got one of these when I was 16 to ride with me when I was on my 50. I also sat and helped him rebuild the thing and he had a workshop manual from the net. Google is your friend.

Black plug is too rich. There is too much petrol so it therefore needs the mixture altering.

May not be running OTT but just enough it will foul a plug quickly and shut you down.

Get the fuel input down and the oil input up, its always wise to run it a bit oil rich for safety. Then if its running rich it wont wash the oil off the cylinder walls so easily.

They're sweet little bikes when they're running but it's really temperamental, when the cylinder was installed he did use a lot of 2 stroke both on the skirt and cylinder walls but he also put oil directly on the top of the piston head it seemed a lot to me and told me to just walk with it whilst its in gear with no ignition on, spark plug etc just to lube it up it (haha) seemed a crap load of two stroke though, could that be a cause of any problems?

Today I put a cap off petrol in the spark plug hole and tried jump starting it and it fired straight up, then it stopped running presumably because it ran out of the fuel I put in? Why could no fuel be getting to it?

I know I keep harping on about the missing cylinder head bolt.....but if I were you I'd wait until I get the new bolt and washer.....whip the cylider head off and make sure the head gasket hasn't blown.....then put it all back with the 4 head bolts and torque them down to the correct torque.....and then try again.....

I'll do as you say :D thanks for all your help :) I'll not touch it till the bolts are here :)

I hate having nothing to do though :P thanks all :)
