mealexme Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 so, here we go again, another post in the pitstop... Well, I did say I was planning on a binge week of maintenance... A good half a year ago now I decided to polish up some dingy looking metal, but being untreated, it went back to its blackened horrid state quite quickly. So, que my bright idea of lacquer! I did a few parts here and there, but for some reason two bits have started rusting... They didnt rust when they were untreated, but they are once lacquered? That doesnt even make sense to me. I'm guessing lacquer isnt a suitable sealant for polished metal, so what is? Something clear?ThanksAlex Quote
Fozzie Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 You know every day I come here I can always be sure that in pitstop you will have asked another question for us to answer! Use some hammerite and then lacquer. Or go to ebay and find paint you want.If there is any trace of rust it doesnt matter what you put on top it will rust again. You need to let the material soak in a rust remedy you can get in halfords. Then I suggest stripping, then painting and then adding lacquer! That should see you right You get some good problems! And for tomorrows topic... Alex's engine jumps out of the frame while doing valve clearances and TMBF scrambles yet again to save the day Starring Tango, Stu and Megawatt Quote
mealexme Posted February 22, 2013 Author Posted February 22, 2013 oh yea, there will be another two tomorrow! Then I suggest stripping, then painting and then adding lacquer! That should see you right Is there no way of sealing polished metal rather than having to paint it? I like it nice and shiny! It was lacquered only about an hour or two after polishing, so I presumed there would be no trace of rust what so ever, especially as it hadn't rusted previously Quote
Fozzie Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 How many layers of lacquer did you apply? You really need 2 or 3 spraying side to side, then flip the work round and do it again after an hour. One wont be enough, do a couple of runs in one direction, flip round and do a couple of runs in the other after the first layers have dried. Tiggie Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 the problem is that moisture gets trapped beneath the lacquer leading to rust, or so i've been told Quote

I think 3 layers, left 10-15 mins between, or what ever it said on the container, I think it was 15. Quote
