mealexme Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Well, technically a "gasket" but either way its a teeny tiny bit of metal and the cheapest I can find is £5 with P+P, and I need two of them! (Plus possibly some others)The size is "8.2X14X1.0". I would guess that's in mm. I know some people on here make this sort of thing at work and/or for fun, so it possible for someone to make me two and put them in the post for less than a tenner? I presume they are meant to be made from copper (its for the rocker shaft plug)If it is at all possible, there may be a couple more that I need too, of a different size. But if anyone can do it for me, you can set a price, and as long as its below a tenner for two washers, I'd be happy to pay you for them Cheers, Alex Quote

Or they are on the bike at the moment, and I doubt copper washers go silver with age, so does anyone know what they are made of then? Is it just a normal washer? In fact, whats the difference between having a copper washer and a "normal" one (ie the ones you get with nuts and bolts)? Quote

megawatt Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Possibly worth sticking to original material, slim possibility of galvanic action between copper, ally and steel ? Doubtful but possible. You can buy things called Dowty washers from a bearing supplier for a few pence. They are alloy with a thin black viton seal. Normal washers are made from mild or stainless steel. Sealing washers are slightly crushable, either aluminium or copper usually. Quote
Chrissb6 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 From what l have read, alloy washers are only used as the cheaper option to copper. No issues with electrolysis with copper, if fact its the alloy washers that has to be plated to avoid corrosion from electrolysis, this plating process make’s the alloy washer more brittle and less able to form a seal on uneven surfaces hence more torque required to make the seal. Copper has been the choice material for gaskets for years, so its only costs that has brought in the alloy washer. Quote

oslin06 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 If you are worried about the copper washer crushing properly, heat the washer up to cherry red and drop it in to cold water, it will be soft after that, but copper does will work harden with age but then you can do it again and again Keith Quote
