edwards_27 Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Hi, been out for a ride in the spring sun today on my 2005 Yamaha R1, about a 50 mile round trip, 5 miles from home going up through the gears (quick shifter fitted) went to shift from 4th to 5th and it was like the I was hitting neutral tried shifting with the clutch same thing. But then I couldn't shift down. With a bit of persuasion I manage to change down to first and that's where it stayed, it will change from neutral to first and back to neutral, shifter is stuck solid. Any one have a clue what may of happened to my gearbox?Cheers Dave Quote
Tango Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Sounds like the selector forks may be bent.......... but check all the easy stuff first, like oil levels, chain tension etc,....but from what you describe it sounds a bit more serious..... What about the gear change linkage.......not sure how a quick shifter would affect this....but can you remove it and try without.....you don't want to be stripping the gearbox if you don't have to...... Quote

Stu Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Yeah you have to take the gear shift linkage off and remove the side casing where the gear selector shaft runs through Once the spring goes the star drive doesn't engage properly for the next gear its an easy fix if it is that But that would be my first port of call as its easiest to check Quote

Yeah....my Bonneville had 2 ratchet plungers that had springs behind them to engage with the selector when changing gear.......but the springs rotted due to condensation in the box.....so the plungers wouldn't engage with the selector.....and that was an easy fix with just taking the cover off the side of the gearbox.....new springs and everything was hunky dory again......
