Guest Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Can someone help please. I'm trying to work out how to do a round riding tour to South Cyprus from London to visit my mother.Maybe it can't be done anymore, or it's simply too much hassle or money. But anyway, I can't figure it what the score is and maybe you already know and can help. It's the ferries. I can't tell from online sites what is up-to-date info. Cyprus is tricky. Google maps takes me through Spain-Algeria-Tunisia-Libya-Egypt, then presumably some ferry to Cyprus... hmmm, I would hope to go through Europe instead. The only other ferry info I found was Grimaldi(?) from maybe Salerno in Italy at 7-9 days(!) and dunce money.Am I wrong about hoping to avoid a route through northern Africa, or there is a decent way through Europe? I'm pretty sure I can't go through Turkey then north Cyprus to south (and then back again). Really hope someone can shed some light. Thanks for reading...JACERR (600rr) Quote
uk190 Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 yes you can ride/drive to cyp.i served in the RAF there a few years back and there is always the occasional nutter who either drove home or drove out to cyp from the UK.from what i remember, the ferry from cyp to greece took several days (and it was expensive too) and then over about a week for the drive back to blighty. .i very briefly considered riding my suzuki TL1000r back from cyprus when i finished serving there in '09 but came to my senses and flew the bike back on one our transport planes for free instead. if you do make the trip mate it will be epic andd a trip of a lifetime. Tankbag Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Occasional nutter lol awesome. Do it Jace, my oppo rode down to southern spain leaving 3 days ahead of his family who flew down, his top tip was talkum powder to help get his leathers on & off. Sweatytastic. occasional nutter, I keep chuckling out loud Quote
Guest Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Cheers guys...Yeah, ok maybe I'm an occasional' - I gotta check those prices though, asked at expats and was told [Edit:] of only 2 tour-worthy options, a Salamis (Alios) ferry from Lavrio, Greece that apparently is more freight and not keen on passengers - you have to ask and I've not e-heard back from them (contacted 'Lines', told me to contact 'Shipping': no reply as yet) http://salamisinternational.com/new/index.php?option=com_contact&task=view&contact_id=4&Itemid=197. With Grimaldi, the main 'option' linked for me, only found this pdf schedule with Limassol on it http://www.grimaldi-freightercruises.com/freighter/england/medEnglish.pdf and can't see how it's done. Bit on hold at the moment but I've emailed the UK contact for Grimaldi to seek advice... Quote

uk190 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 are you sure you can ente rthe south of cyp via the north? the border was tightly controlled and when i lived there it was not easy to cross without a valid reason. for example, you could fly to the northern airport if your hotel and holiday are in the south.when we used to travel from south to the north, we were only allowed a short stay permit. things might well have changed in the last 4 years but i would triple check before you book anything because you wouldnt want to arrive in the north only to find out that the south wont let you in. Guest Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Only going by what I've read online after someone I know told me he crossed several times on holiday last year. Until I've got all my gear delivered and I've rejigged my insurance for mileage and green card there's time for someone to tell me otherwise now. In any case, I can roll either way, just would be fun to surprise my Mum. eg - http://www.northcyprus.co.uk/crossing-the-border/http://www.cyprus44.com/holidays/border-crossings.asphttp://www.allaboutkyrenia.com/north-cyprus/cyprus-border-crossing.asphttp://www.cyprusholidayadvisor.com/border-crossings.htm Quote

Guest Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Ok, I made it! I think I wish I'd been posting here instead but I only made a few posts anyway. I took 11 days but spent 5 nights in Goreme, Turkey cos I'd been there before and bumped into a mate. I'll do some kind of summary in a next post, and I got some tips. But if anyone has any questions please ask me now so I can include a response in the same post. Yeah, it was good! (Though I do have to go back the same way again before Christmas!, ><)) Quote
rennie Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Well done! I'll be interested to see pics/ hear the stories. The twice that I was there you could only easily cross the border if you were UN(I was) Quote
