Fitted new tyre, Inner tube deflated overnight.

So I fitted A new tyre.. badly


One side of the tyre fully around the wheel.

Fed the inner tube in through the gap, slightly inflated, located the valve in the right place.

other side of tyre on.

pumped up using a portable car air compressor.


Checked the tyre roughly one hour later and it was fine, This morning its almost completely flat.


I dont know what could have caused this. Searches seem to show trapped tube, Which I was very careful with though possible I have trapped it still. Or damaged valve.


I want to give it another go but if it is the valve that is damaged could i be doing something wrong? Should the nut that holds the valve in place be on loose? Am I using the wrong type of compressor? I dont really know what else could go wrong with it.


The type of compressor I used is similar to this one.

A compressor is a compressor and has no bearing on if it will go down it just sticks air in the tyre!


You could have something in the tyre and punctured the tube or the valve might be faulty or loose

I recall somewhere in my misty memory banks that bikes shouldn't have inner tubes fitted but for the life of me I can't remember why.

Does seem like a mad theory but I need to make sure Im covering all options.

I was thinking more along the lines of the way it clips on to the valve or the pressure it uses to pump up the tube could have damaged it.

The tube was fine when I took the old tyre off so I know it has become damaged while fitting the new tyre myself. I didnt think to check inside the tyre though :oops:

Spoked wheels have inner tubes. Otherwise the air would leak through the holes. The tyres are designed for use with a tube.

Did you leave the compressor connected to the tyre all night?

Take the tube out put some presure in it and give it a bath.


If no bubbles appear immediately put a weight on it and wait give it time.


If still no leaks fill it to service presure and repeat.


Fix or replace as required


Then ideally remove the tyre and look both on and around the rim but also in the wheel. If you see nothing use your fingers traxe everywhere looking for sharp bits. Then remove/fix.


Then refit the tube, being careful and watching out fot trapping/damaging the tube whole fitting.

I would check the valve before taking everything off, maybe the pin got jammed or something. The nut is meant to be tight but all it does it keep the valve where it's meant to be. Otherwise follow the advice above and good luck!

I know you might have to presume the worst, but im not that stupid :lol:


Thanks for the advice, Really not looking forward to taking a tyre off again though.

You won't get it to pressure without it been in the tyre it will just expand and pop

Yep sorry what I was attempting to say was put more air in, basically increase the stress and see if anything shows especially around the valve.


If I had a tyre deflate and nothing showed on first submersion in water. Id want keep testing until I saw a buble from somewhere otherewise your left never knowing the reason which is half a step from going mad !!!

if you do need to remove inner tube again dont forget to check the rim tape is in good condition otherwise it could be the top of a spoke damaging the tube and not something you have done/not done wrong
