Was just finishing off a service got my torque wrench out putting the rocker cover on when the bolt just kept turning. Then snap off it came. it's now in half with the end stuck in the camshaft holder. I'm devastated, beside myself, teetering on the edge of looking like a baby. Will post a picture once my phone is charged. I've wrapped the engine opening in cling film as I'm guessing it's going to need drilling or replacing. Help needed please where do I go for this kind of help? would a car engine engineer help me? will a heli coil be needed is there any specific size I need?

moved to the right section

remove the cam cover and take a pic

you may be lucky and be a bike where the screw in to the camshaft holder and that will be an easy fix you could remove it and use and easy out or just drill it and put a helicoil in or just replace the holder

first things first get a pic

also does your torque wrench go as low down as 10-20Nm??

if not theres your problem

personally I wouldn't even touch bolts that low with a torque wrench well I cant as mine only goes down to 30!!

it should all be done by feel

:stupid:

Don't panic mate you won't be the first or the last this happens to! Anybody can get themselves into a hole getting out of it requires a bit of thought and patients As already mentioned some pic's would useful plenty of experience willing hands on here to get you sorted. I will ask the question what size bolt is it and is your torque wrench calibrated and suitable for the job?

If you take the cam cover off, is there not any of the broken bit you can clamp on to and remove?

If not, cover everything in rags to collect bits and drill a fine hole in the broken piece, put in a small stud/broken screw extractor and wind it out, just then needs a new bolt.

I'm pretty sure the cam cover bolts in to the cam holders so he can simply remove the cam holders and do it off the bike to minimise the risk

or just replace them if he isn't confident in drilling and tapping of course depends on what has actually broken you may not need to tap

it goes 10-110 lbs ft I'm guessing that was my problem as converted I was trying for 7.7 :P

Tuff way to learn Mate! That's not going to click even if calibrated :?

A similar thing happened to me with my Speed Four......I removed the fuel pump from the tank to do some maintenance.....when I put it back there was a ring of 6 studs spot welded to the bottom of the tank which passed through the pump plate and then locking nuts that held it in place....the torque was pretty low (around 10nM which is the lower end of the range on my torque wrench)....so I tightened the first one and obviously didn't feel the click of the torque wrench.....but I felt the click of the stud shearing..... I had to grid the remains of the stud off using a Dremel and found a local company that spot welded a new stud onto the tank for me. The guy at the company said that 10nM or less you would be able to use the screwdriver handle attachment in the socket set....and even then don't overdo it as it's not much more than finger tight.....

So....you are not alone......

Hope you get it sorted mate...... :)

broken bolt remover? :) and cheers for making me feel better but I really wanted to enjoy my bike after cleaning the spark setting the clearance emptying the oil.

don't really want to remove looking at the manual it's a ball ache. have to put springs under compression and well I don't have that tool.

edit: bolt is 8x22 I think

Have you looked at using an "easy out" to screw the broken stud back out?

If it went in cleanly, it should come out OK.

tried yes but it just kept turning, I don't get how it was supposed to work. drilled at a stupid angle which probably didn't help.

So long as you haven't damaged the threads, you should be OK. The more of the stud that's drilled out the better.

Worth watching some vids on YouTube of how to use an easyout.

Replacing the part would be last resort for me.
