i have a 2005 cbr 1000 fireblade. i went to start it. i put the keys in and switched it on. the dash does the on procedure (needle up and down and lights). then i press the ignition button and the dash turns off and bike wont start. if you press the ignition switch again a few times the dash does the on procedure again.

any ideas????????

thanks

Mines being doing that since I accidentally cracked one of the terminals on my bike which is now held on by string till I can afford a new battery :)

Not much help but maybe you've got a loose connection of some sort some where or your battery is flat?

Moved to Pitstop.....

Yeah....I'd be checking the battery voltage and battery terminal tightness etc...... 8-)

Just got a new battery yesterday. It started and was perfectly fine yesterday. Giving it a charge now to see if it's just the battery but doesn't seem like that would make the dash flick on and off

Check the tightness of the terminal screws.....if they're loose you'll get an intermittent connection which will do exactly as you describe.....

I had something similar happen to me on the Sprint I just sold......and it was the Reg/Rec going through its Death Throes...... :( New Reg/Rec sorted that one out...... 8-)

Sorry mate....don't know where it is on the Blade.....but someone else around here is bound to know..... 8-)

Cheers. Same problem has occurred even after charging the bike. Will order a new regulator/rectifier and see if its that

I'd try to jump start it first before buying a reg/rec, I would say you have a duff battery. Don't replace the reg/rec without having it tested first.

I would make sure its charging first before buying a reg/rec you could be throwing money away as it could be a duff battery or even an electrical drain somewhere

Get a DVM and measure the voltages;

battery should read 12.3-12.6v when sat. When running and revvuing a bit you should get around 14.5v give or take, minimum charging is 13.8v so any less and your reg/rect is duff. When cranking the starter it will drop to around 10v no dramas, much less means it's flat/duff.

actually not entirely true

my bike used to charge at 13v and sometimes drop to 12.8v

nothing wrong with the reg/rec at all

the wiring on these bikes is just crap and modding the wiring sorts it out and gets it charging at 14+ volts

so before ruling the reg/rec if its charging low then check wiring and connections you will be amazed at what is lost through crappy wiring :)

Everything I've read indicates that the chemistry of a 12v lead acid battery means it needs around 13.8v to be charged at a rate sufficient to restore it in a relatively short time, which is needed in most vehicle applications. the lower the voltage the slower the charge. Your TL maybe does only show 13v but what do you expect from an old nail like that? High resistance connections/wiring will deffo compromise it.

:stupid: All to easy to start swopping out parts until it works but can cause unnecessary expense. First do some diagnostics and find the fault. It could be the reg/rec as mentioned, or it might just be a stupid battery connection.

my tl doesnt show 13v it shows a healthy 14.4

the TL showed 13v from new

as said shitty wiring

if the reg/rec puts out more than the battery needs ie 12.6v then it will charge albeit slowly

I wont bore you with why the TL only charged at 13v but it had nothing to do with old connections

You know your bike then, which is the point really If you have a DVM then keep an eye on things, check voltages occasionally and when it changes you'll know something is probably wrong. That will save you getting stuck at the side of the road, or missing out on a day's ride.
