All going good until I go to put sump plug back in. As per manual 23nm just starting to nip it up and it goes loose. Threads stripped. Took it back out and most the threads are still left on the plug. Must have been over tightened last time it was out (not me) Removing exhaust to access sump and 2 mani bolts break off, could hav been worse and broke more. Gave up in the end jumped on the pushbike and went home. Ggrrrrrrrrrr ffs Quote

I stripped the sump on my XS1100 when I had it......had to fit a new sump pan on that.....which was when I learned the value of torque wrenches..... Guess the previous owner wasn't a torque wrench man..... Quote
fq-craigus Posted September 8, 2014 Author Posted September 8, 2014 I'm getting the pan off tomos and dropping it to a local shop for either retap with larger thread of a helicoil, I been looking for dumps online tonight and not finding much. Sheared bolts are the Bain of my life lol but on a truck I can just get the gas torch out and welder but not my bike lol. Yh I think the last person to svs it was a bit ham fisted. What makes me laugh is this is the first sump plug I have actually torqued up, and it's gone wrong grrrr. I'm now having to battle rubbish traffic in the car, but every cloud has a lining, at least I can get my fix of radio 1 for a few days Quote
Stu Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 lucky bugger with the removable sump!! mine is all built in to the casings! someone stripped it before me and helicoiled it and during an oil change the helicoil came out you could just drill and tap it and use a larger sump plug although saying that it will probably cost the same as someone doing the job with a helicoil! The local bike shop I spoke to said a helicoil might not be an option for some reason or another so it might end up being retapped. Could do it myself but I'm doing it in downtime at work as we are a tad quiet but I don't wanna take the Mick as I will have my work cut out getting the fiddly snapped bolts out. It's also cheaper to get someone to do it for me than to buy a helicoil locally, they are between 30-50 quid for a kit. I know they cheaper online but I'm pushed for time really. Quote

fq-craigus Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 I havnt closely inspected sump yet that's this morning task when I pull it off. We have a real good engineering shop down the road we use for work and the guy in there is a s%&t hot Ali welder so I can have it repaired if needs be fingers crossed. Even if it needs re piddling and filling with weld to rebore and tap new thread, if it's do able he is the guy. But fingers crossed no cracks and just a helicoil will do the job.The bolts that have snapped don't look fun as they only look m8 and drilling down them isn't going to be fun Quote

fq-craigus Posted September 10, 2014 Author Posted September 10, 2014 The threads were cream crackered by the last person, who obviously thought he would leave it to be my problem.Well update timeGot the sump off and down to local bike shop where they said a helicoil woukdnt be up to the job because of the type of sump plug pos, so they used something simular, forgot the name but it's a solid threaded collar and the tool cuts a thread and seat for it to lock into, no chance of the thing coming out and not it's not Ali it's stronger than origionally. No cracks in the sump luckily. And they only charged 25 quid which I thought was more than reasonable. Had to drill out one manifold bolt and retap and the other after some drilling came out with an easy out. Bikes all back up and running now just got to get it home, looks like I'll be pushbiking to work soon to bring bike back Quote
