Guest Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Ok...Many of you know, I've not had the best luck with my R1. Bought it with the EXUP cables snapped and it was thought the valve to be seized. Here's my story... :(I took the cables to the place where I bought it for a warranty repair) and sure enough, they put the cables back on. I didn't get to speak to the chap that actually did the work but when I asked his colleague what position the valve was stuck in, he asked the mechanic and came back to me with this answer: "he doesn't know". From this, I got a sneaky suspicion that the valve wasn't taken out, cleaned & re-greased like I expected it to be. When I got it back, I could hear a rattle when I rev passed 6k. This rattle has now transgressed into 1st gear when I slow down to between 2-3k. There was a difference in power, but it's still not wheelie popping power and is now getting back to how it was originally. Anyway, today I got the tools out with the intention to get the thing out and have a good inspection and finish the job and I found two of the bolts that hold the EXUP cover are rounded and rusted to high-heaven! I since phoned the shop and they had come clean: they didn't inspect the valve, he just got the cover off enough to struggle with the cables to get them on - he didn't inspect the valve Anyway, below are the bolts. The are right underneath the engine and very tricky to get to with any tools. - probably about 1/1.5cm working space either side of them. Any ideas on how to get them off???The motor works as it should, video'd it today as I was giving it some throttle. It opens and closes when it is supposed to. The main problem is my serious lack of power from idle - 4k. It's just Sh*te, no other way to put it. Mid-range is good as is top end, I suspect it's probably still not where it should be but the big concern is the low range. I can be in 1st gear and 20mph, open full throttle and not much happens before 30mph /4.5k RPM. Quote
adekeys Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Cant see pics phil But from the vid, it looks like someone has already tried drilling the heads off.Can you separate the exhaust pipe to then give you access on a bench. As an ex aircraft fitter, when other people rounded out the fasteners it was always easier to drill down the centre of the bolt with a smaller drill bit then use a easiout. if you catch the threads in the exhaust you will need to use a helicoil Quote
Guest Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Actually, I remember him saying one had already been drilled out (this gave him access to put the cables on). Here's the photos upload differently: Quote

eastanglianbiker Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 as the shop has admitted not doing the work on it correctly i would be passing it back to them telling them to get it sorted as they promised they had and as its warranty work t here will be no charge to you even if they need to remove and change the exup valve Quote

Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Is the bike on finance? If so ring the bike shop explain the situation tell them to pick it up and sort it out otherwise you will speak to the finance company who will back you up as it's in their best interest and also tell them you will take it to trading standards That's the route I would be going Quote
Guest Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I have decided to take it there on my week off work (beginning of October).Stu, you are right, I'm well within my rights to demand them to pick it up and fix it... but... I'm a nice guy, I don't want to go down the arsy route just yet. I will demand my tank to be filled up at the very least. I will also want to see the work and valve before it goes back together. How annoying though?! What kind of idiot replaces the cables without actually thinking there must have been something that caused it... and the worst thing is - I TOLD THEM THE VALVE WAS SEIZED!!!What I don't understand is... the cables are turning when they are supposed to. Does this mean the valve head is rounded?? Quote
Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'm the same I'm a nice guy until someone fobs me off I have just got a brand new car and upon taking it for a long drive I noticed the steering was off slightly and it was pulling to the left I took it back to seat who looked at it took it for a "test drive" and said they cant find a problem!! when I got back in the car it had the same mileage as when I drove in! so no test drive then! I took it for a 4 wheel alignment check (free) it was all over went storming back in a little high rate told the sales manager who sold us the car still high rate! told him if its not sorted I will be returning the car! problem fixed straight away the sales guy was fuming with the "mechanic" and I know words was said to them too so it does work at some places anyway back to your bike!! I wouldn't be touching it myself unless they was willing to supply the parts for you to fit I hate monkeys working on any vehicle of mine this is why I do it all myself so I know its done right I would atleast voice your opinion and see how they react if no joy I would be looking at some compo to get it sorted or returning the bike as not fit for purpose Quote
Adam Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'd also demand they fix it and ask to be present throughout the entire process as you can't trust them after last time, then just casually drop trading standards into the conversation and see how quickly they change their minds! Can't you get the bike repaired at a local garage and get them to foot the bill? I know my partners dad bought a new (to him) car and something went wrong and he was in Wales so they told him to go to the nearest dealer and not to worry about the cost. Quote
Guest Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Since we're going this way of bike being not fit for purpose etc...When I took the lower fairing off...There was Oil, all over the left hand side... @Joeman, guess that's the nice smell you were referring to Part of me reeeeeeeeaaaaallly wanted to ignore that... but I'm going to get them to have a look at it and if it's a big job, there will be serious words. I'm 50/50 as to whether it's a problem, or when the numpty mechanic fitted the oil filter, he didn't clean off any excess or tighten it etc...I love this bike but I can see why this type of dealer is enough to warrant people hating the bike, all because the dealer wasn't thorough enough with their checks. Quote
Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I was going to say looking at the pics it seems you have an oil leak too!! I would be tempted to clean it all up and see where its leaking from first Quote
Guest Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Well let's be fair - wherever it's leaking from, it'll not likely to be a small fix is it???I'm going for lunch. These dealers have made me angry with their inability to do a thorough check. Quote
Joeman Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 If you need some garage space and tools, you're welcome to pop round my place. Quote
Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I think it is a leak looking at the colour of it if it was from an oil change it would have all washed off by now! although been the left hand side how lubed is the chain? it could be excess oil from lubing the chain Quote
Guest Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 It does have a scottoiler and it's possible it came from that. I set it to minimum as soon as I got back with the bike since it was peeing oil all over the place. Quote
Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 that could be your answer there check all around the sprocket cover to see if its caked in oil Quote
acting_strange Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 It does have a scottoiler and it's possible it came from that. I set it to minimum as soon as I got back with the bike since it was peeing oil all over the place. You don't set a Scott oiler to "Minimum" you set it so that it drips one drop every minute. And the outlet should be touching the sprocket. Quote
Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I think thats the least of his worries at the moment Quote
Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I have just watched the video and you do know the valve does nothing without the bike in gear and clutch out dont you? I found this out on my mates R6 Quote

Stu Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 so did my mates but get it on a solid paddock stand and stick it in gear and it will move Quote
