wiring melted and possibly damaged radiator?

Yesterday night i was riding home and the front of my bike started smoking, had no idea what it was pulled over but because it was dark i could really check to see what the problem was, i noticed a bulb was of off so thought maybe just the bulb blew or worse the wires melted.

well today i took it part to check what was damaged and well i was quite shocked. i dont know much about bikes only started riding a couple weeks ago so explaining is kinda hard so ill post some pics of the damage below

also it looks like my radiator fins are damaged, about 1/5 of it is bent however i dont have any overheating issues, should i do anything about it? i have this radiator cover i could put over it.

Yeah.....the airflow through the rad will be a bit restricted.....but, if it's not overheating or leaking I'd leave it alone......a rad cover may stop further damage.....but some rad guards can restrict the airflow, so it may reduce the flow further and start to cause some overheating issues.....

Looks like a nice cheap'n'nasty headlamp unit has been fitted......and bodged to fit as well......throw it in the bin and either get a standard headlamp unit or one from a reputable manufacturer......and get a crimper and decent crimp connectors when fitting the new one......

thanks for the reply. i bought the bike about a month ago. The mounting points on there are 8 inchs apart. what would you recommend i get?

Well....that kinda depends on what style you want......you could get a standard 7 or 8 inch round headlamp.....or a twin Predator unit......

Looks like something has shorted within the light unit and because someone has dicked around with the wiring and maybe bypassed or upgraded a fuse so much that the wiring melted instead of a fuse blowing. That's how fires start.

If you have a wiring diagram, try and trace back to the fuse wherever it is. Surely there should be one and I'd question why it didn't blow.

Oh, and as for the radiator, that looks pretty messed up and I wonder how on earth it got like that unless some clown used a jet wash on it or something in the past. You could try and straighten the fins with a cocktail stick to improve airflow but if it's not overheating or leaking you could just leave well alone.

privately, the previous owner used a crappy choc block to connect the wires to the headlight. and it didnt help that the headlight he put on there is a shitty quality. I got a feeling he crashed the bike and made it into a street fighter. the radiator i didnt notice untill i removed a radiator cover which he had zip tied over it :/ might try straighten the fins or just put the cover back over it.

for the headlight i dont really like that circular bulb look. interested in these two.

Leave the radiator alone , you could make it worse!!! If the cooling is adequate, it's not a problem.

Print out the wiring diagram to help identify the correct colours etc and get yourself a crimping tool and connectors to reconnect the wires to whatever headlight unit you to choose to fit.

If it were me, I'd leave the existing one in place and get it working before I thought about replacing it and adding to the problem.

i have got the current one working, but its a cheap tacky headlight and it dosnt even fit on the brackets properly, the previous owner cracked a part of the headlight forcing it to fit :/

just need to replace it now.
