Bike problems

Hi there,

I have a 1999 Yamaha YZF Thundercat.

I have had no problems with her until yesterday.

I started the bike up, warmed it up as usual and set off for a ride. I got about 5 miles down the road when I was going up a hill and I noticed that she suddenly had lost all power. I got to the top of the hill and pulled over, I then noticed that the engine literally sounded like a lawnmower!!!

I managed to ride the bike back home but am now obviously mega concerned as to what on earth is wrong with my bike.

I am a complete novice when it comes to anything mechanical but I do like to try and learn.

My nearest bike shop is only a 5 minute ride but I'm worried that if I ride the bike any distance that I could end up causing more damage to the bike.

Hi and welcome to the forum pop over to newbies and stick a post up and also add your location to your profile

you problem could be a number of things

although it sounds as though its running on 3 or maybe even 2 cylinders

start it up from cold and feel the header pipes to see which one/s are cold

you could have a duff coil or blocked carbs or something

Thanks for the reply Stu,

If it is the coil or blocked carbs is it an expensive fix?

depends who you go to to fix it! or if you do it yourself

if you can do it your self then a blocked carb can be cleaned for the cost of some carb cleaner and your time to strip and the coil will just be the cost of the coil and again time to fit

not sure what a garage would charge I dont use them!

Yeah I've got oil in the engine, if only it was that simple.

I was having a look at some other forums with people experiencing the same problem and some people were saying it was just a case of fitting a new spark plug.

Stupid question, but my nearest bike garage is 5 miles away. Will I cause damage to the bike if I was to ride it to the garage to get it diagnosed?

Can't you get the garage to pick it up for a few quid? You may be fine riding it 5 miles to the garage......but you could also total the engine......depends on what's wrong with it...... I find the explanation of spark plugs a bit hard to believe........but I'm prepared to be educated......
