Dynamo_Delboy Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 So i topped up my oil this morning on the old CBR600 and noticed on the way 'home' from work that it seems to be blowing white smoke from the exhaust.I never noticed it on the way to work.Have i possibly put too much oil in or do i have a bigger problem? Please say its not gonna cost me a fortune lol Quote
Dynamo_Delboy Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 When i checked the dip stick it was sitting just below the lower line (bike was on side stand as no centre stand) so topped it up with the 3/4 of a litre i had left in the bottle. There is no change in the ride of the bike and all feels well with it just the smoke caught my eye.Its not thick smoke the leaves a trail down the street but seemed enough for me to notice it.Bike is still idling fine aswell. Stu Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 is it constantly smoking or just as you set off? could be condensation in the exhaust that will burn off after a ride Quote
Dynamo_Delboy Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 It was doing it on my full return from work mate.Around 8-10 miles on motorway.(It has been pissing down with rain all day though. Was dry going to work) Quote
Stu Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 does sound like its burning a bit of oil! could you have over filled it? Quote
Dynamo_Delboy Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Im thinking i may have over filled it mate.It does smell a bit oily.Has only started since i topped up today. Quote
whitedevil Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 You're supposed to check the oil with the bike level not on the side stand. I would say you have over filed it. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 need to check oil with bike upright not leaning over so iit will now have far to much oil in it Quote
Dynamo_Delboy Posted March 13, 2015 Author Posted March 13, 2015 I usually lean the bike against railings to check oil level buf closest thing yesterday was my car lolChecked it today on level ground and its about 1/2 cm above top level but never had the problem today going to work.Wee bit white smoke til bike warmed up then clear. Grumpy Old Git Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Siphon off that extra 1/2 cm.Should be fine then. Quote
whitedevil Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 The pump off one of these http://www.chaucersolutions.co.uk/images/products/radox-hand-soap-dispenser-pack-bkk7.jpgis great for removing a bit of oil. Quote
Lumor_uk Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 ha I used a pump from a large bottle to do that for my car when mechanic tipped all 5 litres in (nob). white smoke is oil getting past pistons. don't ride it till you've got that excess oil out or you'll damage it. Quote
Stu Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 white smoke is oil getting past pistons. don't ride it till you've got that excess oil out or you'll damage it. Not necessarily! It could be getting past the valve stem oil seals or blowing up in to the air box and in through the intake Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 correct me if im wrong here but i always assumed white smoke is condensation and or water getting hot or burning and oil is blue smoke Quote
