A40man Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 i have been surprised at how much restoration has cost, i've been trying to make one good bike out of two similar machines, both 1990.some gaskets and bushes have been hard to find/expensive and although i have done the bulk i have used a local mechanic when stuck, there have been problems undoing bolts/re threading plus seized bush type fittings that i have been forced to get professional help withnearly there but really it would be cheaper to buy another in running order than the rebuild that i attempted, wonder if others find similar Quote
Mr Fro Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Pretty much always unless you're lucky enough to get a mega bargain that needs little work. It turns out that the whole is definitely not greater than the sum of it's parts. Quote
fq-craigus Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Yup it adds up, im restoring a pegaso 1994 and like you say there is one hidden prob to overcome after another. Mine at the mo is slow running jet screw siezed and chewed up, heat not helping. Quote
mattycoops43 Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 It is the way it goes. however, done right you end up with a bike which you know is fully sorted. there is no such thing as a cheap old bike.Any old 'bargain' bike you need to budget for:tyresbatteryfork sealsheadstock bearingswheel bearingsengine service (oil filters and plugs)OFTEN fork stanchions or rechromingchain and sprockets.6mm and 8mm helicoil kits.Bikes which are promised as in good rideable nick, very rarely are. You may get a few months use out of it without work but you will find most of these components will fail within a short space of daily use. This is not being negative, it is just years of experience of buying cheap bikes because I didn't have any money, then doing them up but spending more than I could have got a good one for in the beginning. However, you need to be able to afford a good one to start with, otherwise it is a good route to getting on two wheels and learning to do the work yourself. Also, there are lots of bikes for sale for strong money which still have all these issues. I won't pay top dollar for an old bike unless I can see all these things have been sorted already. Quote
Guest Posted June 21, 2015 Posted June 21, 2015 Also, there are lots of bikes for sale for strong money which still have all these issues. I won't pay top dollar for an old bike unless I can see all these things have been sorted already.I know all about this due to wanting an R80 engine for my Ural. I saw on ebay a very very tatty BMW R80 Rt ( the full fairing jobbie from around 1983). It was naked with no panniers or fairing. Had been stood for a while but had had an engine rebuild at a reputable BMW dealer a while ago. The front discs were a mass of rust from standing for so long and the exhausts looked tatty and there was paint falling off the frame due to the amount of rust around the swinging arm. I thought I'll have punt on that and if I get it for £800 I can break it and get some money back with the bits left over.It went for £1900 which if it had been me selling would have cheered me up no end. Yet there are a couple of later R80 RT 's ( which are fully loaded with fairing and panniers) with around the same miles and in nearly standard condition which need nothing doing going for £1800 . The bloody world has gone mad. So some twat has paid over the odds for a nail which needs maybe another £1000 spending on it and the frame stripping and repainting. The exhausts are over £500 alone for good ones .I am constantly amazed at what knob ends will pay on ebay for shite. So no is it worth spending money doing a rebuild on a bike. No its not but that is not the point. I do it because I want to. I could just go down the pub and piss the money up the wall if wanted to waste it. But I am in the happy position of actually being in credit when i get my panther rebuilt and on the road. I think I will need a round another £1000 to finish it. I think I have spent about £2000 so far and they are going for around £5000 now. So I will be in profit buy the end. But then my total outlay for the bike in the first place was only £100 for the engine as I had most bits either lying around or got given them. Quote
Guest Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Here you go.Some twat paid £1900 for this nail.http://russianbike.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/bmw.JPGIts got a Police style rear single seat and all that has been done is they have taken the rear cowl off. Leaving the standard BMW hideous plastic rear guard in place. The frame is just a mess with rust all over as can be seen here. But the swinging arm and rear drive are as bad. The engine and gearbox are just a mass of white oxide with oil leaking form the front cover . Mine weeps from there but not as bad as this. its supposedly a cafe racer/ bobber which is the current style for Beamers now. But this is a piss poor job. Its still got the hideous rear BMW frame where most decent bobbers do a proper job and cut it away. All in all this bike is bodge and some tosser paid more than some nice standard bikes. I dread to think how much he will need to pay or the time he will need to spend to get a decent bike.Where as for £1800 you can have this with less miles on the clockhttp://russianbike.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/bmw1.JPGYes its slightly tatty in places. but looks a good honest bike. Mr Fro Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Yeah but look, the first one has reflectors on the forks - worth every penny. Quote
Guest Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Or for 1400 quid you can have this.http://russianbike.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/b.JPGhttp://russianbike.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/b1.JPGWell no you can't actually as I have just bought it. 50k on the clock and a very slight hole in the collector box but apart from that a very nice and tidy bike. I should be getting it tomorrow so will start the ripping apart this week.Very chuffed to f*** to say the least. Even the guy in the shop says he had stuck it on at a too cheap price. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 are you keep it for spares or will you be selling unwanted parts off as a mates dad has been restoring r80 for ages Quote
