Phooey Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 OK, silly question time.During my taking apart and prettying my bike I removed the coolant. I need to replace this now.Silly question one. Do I replace it with special glycol ethylene for bikes or will any antifreeze product be ok.Silly question two. I notice that my bike has a bleed nipple in the coolant system (left hand side by the ?water pump?). Do I need to bleed air out after re-filling? Quote
Mr Fro Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I always use the bike stuff that's safe for aluminium - I'd rather pay the few quid extra for piece of mind. You'll need to crack off the nipple when you first fill it (to prime the pump) and then every now and again just to check all is well. Quote
Phooey Posted December 11, 2015 Author Posted December 11, 2015 Ah ok, so I crack the nipple with the bike running or off? And every now and again as in daily, weekly monthly? Not done since I've had the bike so should I have been? Quote
Mr Fro Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Once you've filled it you'll need to bleed it with the engine off. When you start it up you should be able to feel the engine, coolant pipes and rad get warm. If the pipes and/or rad don't start warming up within a couple of minutes or you hear a swishing noise coming from the pump then you'll need to open the nipple a bit to release the trapped air as it works its way around. You can do it this bit with the engine running or not. Squeezing the pipes can help get the air out if you're having trouble. Once things start warming up, any remaining air should vent through the rad cap or expansion bottle depending on your set up but you shouldn't have to touch your nipples from this point on unless you really want to. cockercas Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Just remember the stat needs to open before the rad will get warm. Quote
Stu Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Just remember the stat needs to open before the rad will get warm. not entirely true! you have a bleed hole in your stat which will allow hot water through before the stat opens which will start to warm the water up in the rad this is to stop cold shock so you dont crack your head or block from introducing stone cold water Quote
