Callist Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 Hi Guys,I just started work on changing my 1996 Thunderace's spark plugs and I noticed that the spark plug threads have some oil(?) on them. What could be causing this and how should I proceed, should I be worried? Also I can't believe how rusted up the plugs were, no idea when the previous owner last changed them.http://i.imgur.com/qpaGgqS.jpgThanks. Mr Fro Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I wouldn't be worried. Rusty outside plugs aren't uncommon as they can catch the weather easier than the inside ones. Especially if your bike lives outside and the plugs aren't changed that often. The crush washers don't look particularly... crushed. Did they come out quite easily? If the plugs are loose you can get blow-by and mucky threads just like you have. Make sure the new ones are installed correctly and you'll more than likely be fine. Quote
Callist Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 Thanks for the fast reply, appreciate that. The plugs came out amazingly easy (1/4 or less turn and I could do the rest by hand). It is extremely difficult to get any tools above the spark plugs so I may have to invest in some uni-joint spark plug sockets so I can properly torque them up.Thanks a lot. cockercas Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I only do spark plugs hand tight plus 1/4 turn. You only need enough to compress the washer. Quote
Guest Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I only do spark plugs hand tight plus 1/4 turn. You only need enough to compress the washer.I do the same and my YBR sees some serious water on the lanes. Water never gets inside. Quote
uk_browning Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I wouldn't worry about the oil too much but check it in the future and monitor the oil level. I had it much worse on my old CBR and it didn't burn any oil or smoke. Quote
