The previous owner of my ER6F had the preload set as per the picture. Looking at the manual I think it's at the highest setting.

I've tried adjusting it using the spanner in the bike's toolkit but it won't shift in either direction. Any tips?

You should have a tube spanner that is able to slip onto the handle of the c spanner intended to adjust the setting on the shock.

The tube is often flattened and its purpose is to give a gentler grip on the hand than the spanner alone which has sharp edges and also it increases the lever length to make adjustments easier.

This shows it in action

well that all depends which way you are looking at it

you want to be pushing the spanner down to reduce the load in steps ideally

Id use position 1 or 2. Easier to turn preload down in steps using C spanner and extension tube, with bike on Abba or paddock stand. If you need it , use a longer tube on C spanner.

Thanks everyone, put it in a paddock stand this morning, got my wife to hold the bike just for extra stability and then gave it some brute force and ignorance.

Once I shifted it off the highest setting the other adjustments were easy.

Left it on two and will check how it feels.

Thanks for the advice, it was quite a simple one but sometimes you just need the reassurance that the 'just go for it' technique isn't the wrong one :)

I would read up about rider sag and how to measure it then set the suspension to that
