vivalavidabohemia Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 Hello all, I am afraid that I have a new issue with my old 600 cbr honda (2001). When I try to start the engine, the electric part of the starter seems to work, but not the mechanical part. I base this assesment on the sound of the motorbike, I hear the electrics, but not anything trying to move the mechanical part/pistons. I thinkg it is likely the gear connection between the electric motor and the shaft, (although I have not openned the engine yet as want to have a clear target/s before I do so). More than happy to hear about comments from more experienced people. Comments are mpore than welcome. Jordi Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Is the solenoid activating and the starter motor spinning? If yes - Trouble! If no - Probably a stuck solenoid. Quote
vivalavidabohemia Posted December 11, 2022 Author Posted December 11, 2022 My understanding is that the starter motor is spinning based on the sound (the electric part of the starter seems to be working, but I do not hear any sound from the pistons/mechanical part). I am hopping it is going to be one of the gears that connect the starter with the shaft. On your previous post you say that if it is spinning it will be a trouble. Please, which kind of trouble? The main reason for asking is that I am planning to open the motorbike next weekend and having an idea on what to look for will be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help. Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 If the starter is spinning but not turning the engine then it will spin very quickly so you'll get a fast whirring sound rather than the usual cranking sound. When you operate a starter the usual noise you hear is a combination of the starter and engine rather than separate noises. So if the engine isn't turning over the noise will be very different. If you remove a spark plug and put your hand over the hole, then crank the engine. If it's turning you will feel the compression. Quote
vivalavidabohemia Posted December 26, 2022 Author Posted December 26, 2022 Hello, Planning to open the motorbike tomorrow. If the pistons move, please what is the most likely source of the problem? Quote
