Oh-Danny-Boy Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 Seen a nice 2011 hornet 600 and want to buy. It's covered 15k. Just called a dealership (I know they're generally expensive) been quoted £700-900 for the 16k service (including the valve clearences). I haven't ridden for a few years so I'm out of the loop with pricing and places. Can anyone recommend a good independent garage in Manchester that is cheaper than a dealership? Thanks Quote
Gerontious Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 (edited) This is why I always tell people to check the service history and ensure no big service is on the horizon. An impending major is definitely a major downside to this particular bike. I would pass it by. you would probably be much better off with a newer one. that doesn't have this big bill in the offing. or alternatively.. do the research. Do these bikes actually need the valves doing at 16K. it may be in the service schedule, but is it actually essential. The bill is normally due to the time involved in getting to the valves, bit of a waste of time if after all that labour the valves are still within tolerances. And this is normal for a bike of that mileage and age. My own bike is due a major at 16K. but im not going to waste my money. My dealership has NEVER seen a bike like mine that needed the valves adjusting at 16K. so... im not going to pay circe £600 in labour costs to be told its fine. no adjustments required. Those new hornet 750s look great. £90 a month..... Edited April 10, 2023 by Gerontious 1 Quote
Oh-Danny-Boy Posted April 10, 2023 Author Posted April 10, 2023 Yes, this is an error on my part for getting too distracted/excited at getting back on 2 wheels and not checking the finer details. I assumed that if it's in the handbook, it needs doing. How would I find out if the work actually needs to be done? Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 If its starting OK from cold it's probably fine. Quote
