On June 21, 2023, yet another one of BMW’s bestselling R 1250 GS models rolled off the line at Motorrad’s plant in Berlin-Spandau, Germany. You’d think that would be no big deal, except that this particular GS had the exceptional honor of being the 1,000,000th one to be produced with a boxer engine. So you can’t blame the Bavarians for popping a bottle of sekt to celebrate the occasion.

In what’s become something of a norm now for the German manufacturer, BMW also used the occasion to pre-announce—or, let’s just call it “tease”—a forthcoming model. That would be the latest edition of the GS with a boxer engine, the R 1300 GS.

The new, bigger GS will be presented on September 28, 2023, at the grand opening of the new BMW Motorrad Welt (World) in Berlin, an interactive space that allows entrants to explore BMW’s latest motorcycle models—similar to the existing BMW Welt in Munich, but more motorcycle-focused. BMW motorcycles have been manufactured in Berlin since 1969 and GS models with boxer engines have been cranked out there since 1980, so the new Welt at that location makes perfect sense.

BMW brass was quick to acknowledge the bike production landmark however, with Dr. Markus Schramm, head of BMW Motorrad, saying, “With the R 80 G/S and its unique combination of on-road and off-road suitability, everyday qualities and long-distance touring abilities, BMW Motorrad created the new motorcycle genre of touring enduros in 1980.

“I am therefore very pleased that today, and especially in our ‘100 Years of BMW Motorrad’ anniversary year, we are able to contribute a major milestone to the history of the BMW Group with the 1,000,000th BMW GS motorbike with a boxer engine. I am equally pleased that the unique history of BMW Motorrad models with boxer engines will soon be supplemented by an exciting chapter with numerous innovations with the new R 1300 GS.”

BMW is spinning this latest GS news into its continuing 100th anniversary celebrations, which are running throughout 2023.

Meanwhile celebrations for the 100th anniversary of BMW Motorrad are continuing apace. There will be the big bash at the BMW Motorrad Days from July 7 through 9, and then the new BMW Motorrad Welt will officially throw open its doors on September 28 to a select few fans. The new space—or as BMW is calling it, “heart of the brand”—is sited directly next to the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau, and after September 30, the BMW Motorrad Welt will be open to all. Fans will be able to follow the September 28 opening ceremony via livestream on BMW Group and BMW Motorrad social media channels.
