DB_87 Posted July 2, 2023 Posted July 2, 2023 (edited) Hey, hi! I'm a newbie, I joined hoping to get some advice. I'm looking at importing a bike from Germany. Not to ride home, I understand that's complicated. I will be trailering it. I have understood that HMRC will advise on the tax amounts to be paid based on the value of the bike +20% VAT when you apply.for the NOVA. My question is, how do HMRC decide what the value of the bike is, for example if it's from a dealer then is it then the purchase invoice? However how is that impacted if I buy from a private seller? How do I prove what I paid for the bike, are they accepting a hand written 'receipt' or bill of sale type from the private seller? Any advice around this is appreciated. sm0129 Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 As well as VAT, you may also be liable for import duty- I belive the duty is calculated on the price and VAT amount Quote
husoi Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 Not as easy as that, VAT would have already been paid by first owner. I agree with import duty. You will likely have to pay it once you convert the plate to UK. Quote
keith1200rs Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 Best way to find out for certain is to ring their helpline https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-revenue-customs/contact/customs-international-trade-and-excise-enquiries Quote
DB_87 Posted July 5, 2023 Author Posted July 5, 2023 Thanks for the replies. I will call HMRC and try and get a definitive answer. I'll try and report back in case it helps anyone else. It's just mainly the question as to how they decide what the value of the bike will be! Quote
