redtailkarn Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 hi, I've got a promblem with my speedo on my zx9r c1. It reads about 6-10 mph out. So if it reads 22 I'm actually doing about thirty. not good since i've only recently passed my test, and i do want to keep my liecence. I intend to get a manual today but if anyone can help it would be appreciated. Oh one thing, the sprockets are standard I don,t know if this could cause a problem but jusy thought i'd say. cheers mick Quote

I'm not sure what it might be, if it's digital then i guess it's either the speedo drive (wherever it might be) or the clock itself.If it's a mechanical speedo then it could be the cable? I've look for a cable but cant find one, thats why I'm off to get a manual. however looked on ebay and they have cables for all zx9r modles, I'm confused. cheers Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 Now i'm trying to think of places in St Albans i've seen ZX9s.The speedo drive might run from your front wheel, in which case there'll be a cable running out from either side of the wheel spindle.Or like you say it can run off the rear sprocket i think, or the rear wheel. If it's mechanical it's usually a bit chunkier than other cables. Quote

Guest Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 is the difference always the same or does it get bigger orsmaller the faster you go. I can't see the problem being a cable as all it would do is spin around , calibration on speedo could be out (could be different one fitted from original). My mini always runs out because it has a 1275 engine instead of the standard 1000. Try to see if anything has been replaced, ask previous owner what they know, this could save a lot of investigation Quote

redtailkarn Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 Thanks for the replies, I Think the speed is constantly out however i can't be 100 percent sure as I've only really check it a couple of times and only up to about fourty. I know it's not a sprocket problem, the rear sprocket is standard and I've done my maths and a front sprocket on it's own can't make that much difference. Apparently my zx9r 98 c1 doesn't have a speedo cable, it's electric something to do with magnets. I have now got a manual and trying to work things out. I now think, either the sensors knackered or may be as you said there's something wrong at dail end. I have call the old owner and he didn't know it was out, I've now got a sat nav so can get a more accurate reading instead of following or being followed. but stil need it sorted. My mate with a c2 said that if it's not a big problem and the same sensor, we can take his and fit it to mine to eliminate or comfirm weather thats the problem. the saga continues Quote

rosszx9r Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 the speedo drive is always on the front wheel unless your talking about some odd ball bike which your not look for the bike black cable coming from the front hub (about 8mm in diameter)if it is a digital pickup then it will be a small wire but again coming from the front hub.usually, all speedo's read faster than you are actually going. how did you check it? the only real way is to have a mate follow you in a carr and both note the speed at a certain point or to use a GPS. GPS is best as the car speedo will also be out.the sprocket has nothing to do with the speedo so don't worry about that. the sprocket only regulates the speed of the back wheel not the speed of the bike (although the two are directly linked along with a dozon other parameters)it all is working ok and the speedo is still reading slow, the diameter of the front wheel may of changed. is it the origonal wheel? check the size. does it have a lower or larger than normal profile?tyre wear won't make a significant change but if a 16" is swaped for a 17" then it certainly could.failing all that, send the speedo off for a refurb. there are plenty of companies doing it if you look through MCNyou can inspect the magnet pickup device by dropping the front wheel out. it's really easy. the speedo drive should just drop out once the wheels off.
