Aland Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 Hi all, a quick question, my YBR 125, 2014, had a starter motor replacement a few days ago and now the bike will only start via the kick start, not the electric ignition as before. Do I need to upgrade my battery? Thanks in advance Quote

Just make sure it's charged before you do anything hasty, also, if you use the kick start to get it going, can you put a multi-meter on the battery to make sure the bike is charging whilst running. Either way, the same type of battery should do the job. As it happens, have you tried jump starting with a spare battery or car battery? Edited December 13, 2024 by Simon Davey Quote
Aland Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 I haven't tried jump starting it, as it starts with the Kickstarter, my issue is the electric start button won't start the engine Quote

First basics would be to follow the cable/s from the starter motor, and check any fuses, especially if it was changed with the battery connected. Quote

Aland Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 I checked the fuse, it's good. I also tested the battery with a 12v light bulb tester. It lights the bulb, but I don't have a multimeter or a battery charger. I was thinking that perhaps the ignition switch is bad? Quote
Simon Davey Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 A flat battery will still light a bulb, and it will also light up the dashboard. Do you get all the lights on the dash? Hang on, is the "run" switch in the run position? (red switch at your right thumb) Quote
RideWithStyles Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 Back to square one…was it fine before you changed the battery? If so is the wiring comprised or have you blown a fuse? Check them and come back to us. Quote
bud Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 You might really need a multimeter to trouble shoot this problem. A cheap one will be good enough to give you an idea of what's going on. Screw fix do one for a tenner. https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-dc-digital-multimeter-600v/793rt Quote
Aland Posted December 14, 2024 Author Posted December 14, 2024 I don't have a run switch, only a red button to depress to start the bike which was working prior to changing the starter motor. I have not changed the battery. The neutral light comes on as does the engine light when the key is inserted, but then the engine light goes off, which is normal. It just won't start using the red starter switch Quote
Aland Posted December 14, 2024 Author Posted December 14, 2024 It's the switch next to the A in the foto Quote
Simon Davey Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Wow, I always thought a kill switch was mandatory. If you lift the seat off, can you hear a relay click when you press the starter button? Also, when you replaced the starter, did you definitely get the cables in the right place. Is there a switch on the side stand? Quote

Aland Posted December 14, 2024 Author Posted December 14, 2024 I will check the relay tomorrow under the seat. And I will check he switch next to the side stand to see if it's not stuck 1 Quote

Has the new starter failed? 2 Quote

bud Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 Did you run a live directly to the starter then? Quote
Aland Posted December 17, 2024 Author Posted December 17, 2024 Im nit sure about the connection. It has one cable connected to the starter motor only. The relay is fine asnid the side stand switch Quote

You could momentarily connect a jump lead from the battery to the cable connection on the starter motor, it should turn over, even without the ignition on. That's what @bud is suggesting above. 1 Quote
Aland Posted December 17, 2024 Author Posted December 17, 2024 My issue is-, the bike will not start using the ignition switch, next to the throttle , but it will start using the Kickstarter Quote

Aland Posted December 18, 2024 Author Posted December 18, 2024 How do I do that? What equipment do I need? Quote
