Simon Davey Posted January 7 Posted January 7 (edited) Rather than wreck a superb restoration thread by @Hairsy I thought I'd put up a picture of the DIFFERENCE between LED side lights and the halogen headlights. Although newer bikes have LED lights, this is for those that still have halogen. This is just to show the difference in the visibility of the bike when these LED side lights are used. Points to note. The engine is not running, if it had been, the headlights would be slightly brighter. The battery was fully charged (still hooked up). The headlights are 2x H4 (150% brighter from Halfords). The phone camera has exposed according to the brightest part of the scene which is the side lights, and is an excellent way to show the difference. RideWithStyles Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Nice and thanks. got to remember that the hals are dipped and not main beam on that picture? so direction is below camera line while the sides are just pointed out closer to the camera. Dont get me wrong I’m sure it is brighter. A great way to show a difference is in the dark from the riders perspective. im sure you’ll still tell the difference as the colouring from the two techs will show what it highlights and how? do the side lights now throw more further away in front out rather the sides? Does it extend its distance to say nearer the Hal’s dipped? If so then how much more? now the problem you may get is flashed at as people may think there too bright, aimed at there eye line or give the impression on full beam at them now? Just a thought. The side lights have no effect on lighting the road, and have no beam to annoy oncoming drivers, they just spread. Side lights are just marker lights. I was trying to point out that because of the brightness, they make the bike more visible to other road users. Quote

RideWithStyles Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Far enough, I was only asking as in it can fail an mot if they are deemed too bright or not working as intended originally. 1 Quote
Hairsy Posted January 12 Posted January 12 For what it's worth, this is how the new Osram LED sidelight bulb compares on my Ducati ST2 project bike: In real life I think the difference is more apparent than it looks in the picture. But I also suspect that the reflector around the bulb isn't as effective as Simon's. 2 Quote

Big difference in the colour of light, and obvious difference in brightness. Edited January 12 by Simon Davey 2 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Yes. it is noticeably so that is good. the design of the head light isn’t the greatest to start with (the single side squashed between the two others and highlights around the reflection cones) but it’s primarily designed around the dipped and main beam to work to a degree not the side lights to tick reg boxes, gonna love the Italians. 1 Quote
