I'm looking at doing my DAS round about April/May..

 

Obviously what bike to get has gone round and round my head a million times. 

 

I've been considering my options from an older CBF600 to VStrom 650 and CB500X.. 

 

Vstrom650 plenty examples (although some higher mileage) around the £3000 mark. 

 

CB500X seems to hold its value as high mileage 2015/16 models I've seen for not a kick in thew arse off of 5k.

 

Here's where my thread title comes in..

 

Where can I get and how do I go about getting, a bike that is "Old/New" stock.. i.e. a new bike but wasn't sold by the dealer and has been usurped by a new model (mainly thinking CB500X by NX500 here. Same bike bar a few bells and whistles and styling changes..). 

 

New NX500 is £6829 (ish) so if I can a new CB500X for a fair few quid less that'll fit the brief nicely.

Fit the brief nicely apart from it's 46bhp. That would soon become tedious for me 🤔 I'd go for something with more power like the 750 transalp.

Not to be immediately dismissed, but, I actually spend a lot of time looking on eBay. 

Sooooo many dealers still advertise their stock on there. 

It's much easier than using Google or Bing. 

You can grab dealers names from eBay, and visit their websites.

Unlike fleck I wouldnt look downer about 46hp as thats his perspective’s not necessarily your or anyone else’s.

I spent over 4 years on 500cc 46hp by choice after life of 955cc 150hp…its in the configuration of the engine that makes more sense.


how old are we taking about your will to go down to?  
Pagetts in Yorkshire has stuff like that but I wouldn’t say they are cheap to sell just certified being it is.

 

cbf600 is an very old bike in your choices (if its the one om thinking of?) and less choices unless it’s very rough.

The vstrom is a twin so leaps off the mark and has been around (still is), parts available, garages will happily service them, Suzuki has programmes for supply parts for the older bikes that generally don’t cost a fortune.

the only thing of these older bikes is if your capability and money terms to service these older bikes?


If you want an easier life and longer term with said bike, I’d go new with a proper trusted manufacturer either Honda or Suzuki will do, you just need to work out what type of bike will work for you best -naked, road cross adventure etc rather than soley years/miles and a few hundred quid difference.

once you have passed go and try a few.

 

I wouldn't rule out going for something like an MT07 or a street triple.  I bought a street triple after passing and was told that was too powerful for a first bike.  but as long as you can regulate your right wrist it will be an excellent bike for many years.  I was looking at the SV650 as i could buy a new one cheaper than a 4 year old Street Triple.  However i very much doubt i would still have the SV if i had.  6 years later i still have the Triumph and if i get a new bike, i will not be selling it.  

 

The truth is, you will have fun on any bike but its how long that fun lasts before you need to get a different one.

Thanks for all the replies.

 

I've seen a few dealers around my area (ish..) that are doing pre-registration models of a couple of bikes I'm interested in for over £1500 off new.. 

 

I tend to keep my cars until they're not only paid off but just too expensive to repair so will likely follow this route with bikes.. Although ideally I'll find the right bike straight away.. (not likely but possible 😀)

 

If I can get test rides (dealers don't like to give test rides to new passes, even though I've been driving for 30 years and have class 2 license so have a fair bit of road sense..) I'll certainly be looking to try a few and get a feel for different bikes..

This one has all the hallmarks of an unsold ex demonstrator, clogging up showroom space for years before being dumped into the auctions.  Not sure about the vendor though and you do not state how old you are prepared to go.  Full matching luggage is a bonus.
