Hello there, I want to make my 125 go faster on acceleration. Can anyone recommend what size rear sprocket should I get?

Hey @Stumpo, that's the question of decades of motorcycling.

It's actually really simple, and I'm not kidding, just count the number of teeth on your current rear sprocket, then get one to fit your bike that has maybe 2 teeth more. You could also get a front sprocket that's a couple of teeth smaller instead, changing the front sprocket is usually easier than having to remove the rear wheel etc.

Take in to consideration though, you'll lose the top speed, but you'll get to your new top speed quicker. Also, make sure there's plenty of adjustment left in your chain adjusters, as the chain will be slack.

When I had a 125 I found just dropping one tooth at the front worked very well. The theoretical top speed may have been reduced but in reality the engine didn't have the torque to hold top gear in any kind of headwind or incline. So in reality by dropping one tooth at the front the bike was actually faster.

For acceleration-

you could get quicker acceleration by reversing below but ul be banging into the rev limiter at 50mph or less as that will be your new top speed and enjoying the world of scootering with a clutch lever.

For top speed-

Upping a tooth on the front might gain you 10mph top speed but your mid range might take a tiny dent.

To roughly gain the same as the front mod you’d have to go down 2 to three on the rear but the mid range dent will probably be more noticeable on a low hp bike, depending on the front and what the rear was as they dont tend to be linear so the results vary. Also you might want to check out clearance at the covers front and rear.

But to gain max speed, you have to have the haircut to reduce wind drag.
