TC Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 at least slowed down until we get the thumbs up or stopped if we didn't. Quote
sparkeh9 Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Ive stopped for and been stopped for before, I think everyone should pull over and just see if they can help, its surprising, as many have said, just how many people dont have phones or dont have credit. Was once on way home and started having battery troubles, the bike was sputtering(later found terminal wasnt tightened properly ). Anyway, was pushing my bke up a slight hill, when a white van pulled up in front of me, at first I thought "what a git, how am I supposed to push it along the road now", but then he offered to help and I was relieved, so we loaded my bike into the van and he took me home . Guest Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Would you guys on like 600cc bikes and everything be embarrassed though if someone pulled up on a 50 to help? Quote
Guest Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 wouldn't bother me m8, it's the person who makes the decision to stop. Not the bike. Quote
Guest Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 er no ? to dj ...as mentioned it is a hard call to make about the state of things these days and unsure about helping lone females etc ... if you feel that you would rather not help as and that their situation is of a dire one ...Call the Police ( if you can use the non emergency number if it is local area List of Non emegency numbers but if it is a situation that poses a danger to the person who has broken down or to other road users Call 999 as with a accident that has resulted in an injury and again in a Non Injury accident situation that poses a risk to other motorists .....Even if you have no mechanical knowledge or able to offer a phone ... Still stop and offer support/company or if they require anything ... they may have a small child in car etc even if you use your vehicle to warn others or even if your in a rush /appointments just make sure that their ok go on your way .... Quentin Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Although I haven't had a bike very long I'd still stop if I thought someone needed a hand. I always stop in my car for pretty much anything, i've changed wheels as I like doing such things (makes me feel like a man). I have found a lot that more people that I expect either dont have a phone or have a phone with no credit so ae generally pleased to use my credit to phone for help.Saying that I wouldn't expect anyone to stop for me just because I've broken down. I can understand why people wouldn't , the person who looks like they need help might just want to stab someone or rob them or both Quote
bex Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 i had a 6 month spell where i broke down quite a bit and on the dangerous A614. one night i broke down in a particularly dangerous spot and had to push he bike up a steep hill to safer area, half way up this hill i had to stop for a gap in the traffic cos there was a central reservation and the gap wasnt wide enough for me and passing hgv's. one of said hgv's even blasted his horn to make me get out his way the barstool. at least 4 bikers passed me and not one even nodded at me.buthaving said that one day waiting for roy to turn up for mfn i was waiting and 1 stopped to see if i was ok. 1........on an mfn night, so you can imgine how many passed me. but i think its cos you never know how the person is going to react to you stopping, so i understand. personally i put my thumb up to see if they ok and see what response i get Quote

Guest akey Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 If it is safe to do so I will always stop or at least slow down to see if I get the thumbs up.If I am in the fast lane of a Mway then sorry I generally dont stop, but otherwise I do, even in the car most times as well. Quote
Susieque Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 As with the other ladies on here, I would stop if I felt I would be safe in doing so. I know absolutely nothing about helping to fix a bike, but I'd certainly give moral support where possible Quote
Guest Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I stopped last weekend for a woman stranded on the m53 . Took her to a garage and filled up a petrol can i keep under my seat in my van . Back to the bike filled the tank and just as she mounted to ride home her boyfriend rang to see what the problem was . She thanked me and set off . good deed for the day . ( boyfriend got an earfull for not ans his phone tho . Quote
Bill_on_a_bike Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I saw a bike out of the window of the bus, looking at the end of his teather with a little moped. I got off the bus at my usual stop about 200 yards down the road. I walked straight back and asked if he needed any help, he said it was fine and he knew what is was, something to do with the battery. They were saying on TV today how all the recent snow brought about great commeradery between strangers, and I think it's fantastic. I'd stop to help a biker aslong as it was safe for me to do so, and i'd hope a biker would do the same for me. Even if you're not mechanically minded, anyone can ride to a petrol station and back. It makes me sad to think stopping to help a female might land me in the doo, but i'd still do it, i'd so what Tim said though, about making it obvious who you are and asking from a distance. Quote
asharin Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I would stop, but only to offer use of phone and company lol. I'm no mechanic Quote
Guest Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 I was on a run through to Hawes, and a biker had, had an off, highsided with pillion, so i pulled up checked they were ok, injuries etc and that they had recovery then went on my way, they had, lots of bikes pass without stopping..also stopped at a car RTA, and flagged down traffic to slow as they were blocking the road and didn't have a triangle. left when blue lights turned up. and have even been known to take someone petrol can to get fuel as they were walking up the road at night with a child, so thought it was the least i could do to help... they couldn't believe my kindness..generally i will slow and then read the rider, if they are after help, they look at you (hopefully/forelornly), otherwise i get a wave or nod, or nothing.... as there aren't interested..
