  1. Have you checked the plug after your starting attempts? Is it wet or dry?

What does the spark look like if you lay it on the cylinder head and kick it over?

Before I got a new spark plug, I took the old one of a few times and it was matt black all over.

It's abit late now to check the new one but ill reply with what it looks like tomorrow.

  2. should not of touched the air fuel screw as that is never the problem unless someone has come along and turned it while the bike was parked up it cant be fine one day and not the next there ha sto be other factors involved.have you cleaned air filter out or removed it and seen if bike will start then as the airfilter might be one that has to be oils soaked to work and wile stood up not in use has dried out

I remember I took out the airfilter couple days ago and seeing if it would start but I only tried to start it roughly twice. And I just checked now and the filter is bone dry. I have a picture of what mine looks like roughly but I found the image on Google its not actually mine: http://prntscr.com/3h7p2b .

  3. have you replaced the plug yet?

Oh yes sorry, replaced the plug today still getting same results. It's really weird cause it was running perfectly fine just over a month ago now.

EDIT: The odd time I can get the bike to start and stay running for 5-15 seconds but as soon as you touch the throttle it loses revs and cuts out, Iv spent around 8 hours messing with the air/fuel regardless to what its at it makes little difference.

  4. [uPDATE] I'v had a tiny bit of luck in finding the problem. After loads of kicking, the bike started and stayed on for 10 seconds ish then died and did so a couple more times. Then I decided to turn the fuel tap on and the bike would no longer start. Im guessing the float is letting too much fuel in? Im not too sure im not that great in diagnostics.

  5. could of also filled exhaust up with unburnt fuel if it was getting past fuel tap then it would overflow round the carb and could of been running into inlet round piston and down into exhaust, you might need to remove exhaust and hang it up to see if any fuel drains out of it as that would be causing a back pressure and stopping the bike from starting

I actually saw that the exhaust was dripping oil so I took it off and poured water down the tube (and dried it all out, dont worry) to get all the oil out and I had 0 luck with that.

EDIT: not sure if it matters but its a 2 stroke.

  6. Few days ago I decided to get my bike out considering it had not been run in ~a month.

It started, lasted maybe 20-30 seconds (idling) then died out, and would not start at all.

After maybe 1 hour kicking it and trying the electric starter it finally started but died instantly by that I mean it didn't even stay on for 1 second(literally).

At this point I am determined to get it started so I tried, cleaning carb(twice), checking wiring, air/fuel mixture, fresh fuel, spark plug. Everything.

After roughly 5-6 hours of it starting then dying within milliseconds I decided to call it a day. Day 2, I can't think of anything else it could possibly be

so I started to mess with the air fuel mixture after a couple of tries with that and having no luck I tried kicking the bike for 5 minutes straight non-stop

and to my surprise the bike started but was running really low revs, on my speedometer it usually ran 3-4 bars when idling now it was at 1 bar (barely)

after 15 mins idling I tried a tiny bit of throttle but it cut out again so couple kicks later it started again and I made very delicate turns with the air fuel mixture

but it died instantly within milliseconds and never started since. So I thought I had it, I thought that was the problem... So I was messing with the air fuel mixture

for roughly 5 hours and I got nothing, the odd time it was running for maybe half a second longer but nothing at all major.

Also if it helps I remember the last time I used the bike I forgot to turn off the fuel tap (yes I know :stupid: ) and was left on for couple hours and I noticed the smell

and turned it off. Then the next day it was leaking petrol from the carb overflow which I cleaned up and thought that was that but turns out if you sat on the bike it would still

leak out the overflow drip by drip, which I didn't think was too much of a problem.

At this point I am totally totally clueless. My conclusion is the bike is flooded badly if it IS what can I do?

Sorry for the huge wall of text I tried to keep it small but keep the details in ;) .

Any help AT ALL will be appreciated. Also the bike is 2012 SM50 with 3k on the clock.

  7. So I'v not started my bike in a while (little over a month) so I took it out to be started at first it did'nt start then realized the battery needed charging so I done that and it started pretty much instantly, it idled then the revs went low and cut out, it done this 1 or 2 times (I figured it was flooded?) but after the 2-3rd time starting it idled perfect sounded normal but I noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust so I let it idle 20-40 mins and the smoke was a little better but it was definitely still there. Just looking for some opinions on what it might be. The bike is a 2012 SM 50.

    Thanks in advance!

  8. So, I have a supermoto but the licence plate is around 3-4 inches from the back wheel(with a passenger the licence plate touches the wheel easy), and my question is can I cut around the licence plate and take the excess of, is it legal? I included a pic to help.

I don't see why not the letters will be the same size but I don't want to risk it.

Or should I decrease the suspension sag of the bike?

  9. Battery.......as I suggested in my first reply...... :)
If it's been stood for a while the fuel might have gone a bit sticky but the battery doesn't seem to be a lot of cop, if you could get a jump start and see what happens then. The first thing to do is check the voltage at the battery if possible both with everything off and when hitting the starter, the only way forward the would be to see if the battery will revive by a good overnight charge if not replace it. John

I found the problem. I replaced the wiring loom and now the bike starts on the electric starter almost instantly, runs and rides perfectly. I have no idea what on the wiring loom was causing the bike not to turn over but its sorted now so i'm happy :) Now another problem I have is the Digi Dash isn't working (it was but before i replaced the wiring) it doesn't show its in neutral nor the speed/revs but all lights work when the stage is switched on although I have a wire that isn't connected to anything which when i follow the wire it goes to a button that changes the info on the dash (miles, time etc..) but its late now so I will try and sort it tomorrow, but im more happy that it wasn't anything major at all.

  10. I assume that you've got fuel in it?.......also try starting it with the filler cap open in case the tank breather is blocked and it's creating a vacuum in there..... 8-)

I forgot to write in. The first time I started the bike I bumped it then let it idle etc... The bike would then start but die (when I start using kick or electric start), 2 days later neither work but It will still bump no problem what so ever. (And yes I have fuel in the bike considering its bumping then running normally)

Basicly I can get the bike to run normal only if I bump it. And if I want to start the bike via kick or electric start I have the let the bike idle for ~20-30mins but even when I electrict start it, it dies. Could it need a carb cleaning? Or is the bike just not got enough battery power to start via electric start or kick (I heard some engines need batterys for kicks)

This is my first bike and I know a little bit more of the "basics" about engines but I lack everything where it comes to diagnostics/diagnosing the problem.

My thoughts as to what It could be, dead battery, clogged carb. Other than those im all out of ideas.

    Any help at all appreciated!

  11. So the bike had been running for a while (half hour), and I cut it out and then it started of the button but died, same with kickstart(started after 2 or 3 kicks).

Any suggestions could it be the carburettor, or the battery or anything else?

    Thanks, Dylan.

EDIT extra info: 2012 CPI SM 50, 5,500 miles, been stood for quite some time. The bike had been stood for sometime the bike doesn't start via kick or electric start, so you have to bump start it. I bump started it and let it idle for roughly 30 mins and then i cut it out and I pressed the electric start and it started but died pretty quick it also same thing happens with the kick it starts then dies. That was 2 days ago I tried it again this morning but I have to bump start it again as the electric/kick start isnt working again. Ask for more info!

  12. How much is it advertised for?
I didn't mean to p*ss on your parade mate......just warning you to be a bit carefull with it really.......but, if it's cheap enough, it may be a good starting place until you can get yourself onto a 125...... :) Really give it a close looking over......a bike that's less than 2 years old that's had a new radiator and several other bits kinda rings alarm bells for me......

Well it was advertised for £600 but the guy took it as part-ex and is willing to take £500 for it(after couple days of haggle).

  13. When you say it won't kick over.....do you mean that it won't start on the kick starter or do you mean that the kick starter doesn't turn the engine over?...... :?

TBH it's Chinese and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole......but I'm getting fussy in my old age.....

Tbh its only until I can get a 125. And I couldnt tell you, I'v just been told what I'v said here, it only starts when its bumped, electric start cant be tested because the battery is dead, it doesnt need a MOT for another 18 month (still on factory MOT), its had a new fuel tap, chain and sprocket & radiator. He also told me its had some work done not because it needed it but because they were less wore parts. The bike is quite far away (45-1hour away) so if I go I do plan on getting it, unless something disastrous happened to the bike I did not know about.

  14. Welcome to TMBF mate.....pop over to the Newbies section and introduce yourself to the rest of the gang when you can....... 8-)

It may be that the battery is too flat to start it on the kickstart......but, if it's been stood for a while the battery may be a dud by now......so a new battery may sort it......but it's always difficult to say without actually seeing the bike......

Wow thanks for such an amazing welcome and reply ! So do you think the battery could be the problem? Or atleast the chances are high of it being the battery? To me I cant think its a major problem because the bike is barely 2 years old (weather this is the case or not I have no idea).

    Thanks again!

  15. So, I'm about to buy my first bike and come across the CPI SM50, it is 2012 model and done 6,000 miles but it only bumpstarts and does not kickstart the bike has a electricstart but cannot be tested because the battery is dead, I also got told the bike has been standing most of its life. What could the possibilities be? Easy or hard fix? I know the absolute basics about bike engines but nothing really technical.

    Any help appreciated thanks!
