  1. Just sorted out insurance, first I rang up a big insurance company but it seemed to have taken them three days to refer my policy request to a specialist so I got a quote from mce online and chose the 'non standard engine' option the total price was £358 I bought it looked at my policy docs but it still said 248cc so I rang them up and told them it should be 497cc I had to pay an extra £20 for the change but they changed it straight away and I got the updated docs. They didn't even ask for an inspection or any other documents. Hopefully they won't later. First part out the way hopefully dvla will go just as easy.
  2. Thanks, I hope it does to, spent a lot of time doing it.
  3. Thanks, I would put a 500 badge on it but I want to surprise a few people Yeah I have heard about the starter gear going wrong but the engine didn't have one fitted when I bought it and they are pretty hard to come by so I fitted the kick start shaft from my 250 engine inside it so it is kick-start only now. I still need to fit the decompression setup to make kicking it over a bit easier though.
  4. Can't help with DVLA advice but I'd love to see some pictures of the bike ! I'm a big fan of the FT having owned two of them in the past and I've also owned a CB250RS . What's the story ? Does that mean there's an FT knocking about with no engine ? I've just done an engine swap myself but it was out of the same size of bike ( ER5 ) I'd better get round to telling DVLA myself, thanks for the reminder . Well I got the cb250rs a couple years ago and was reading about them online and saw people used to put 500cc engines in them and since then I wanted to do the same:) last August there was an ft500 engine for sale on eBay and I won it for £168 bargain! Swapped the engines over with a bit of persuasion and violla. Definitely worth swapping over, the 250 is so light and with a 500 engine in it, it goes lovely. Unfortunately no empty ft laying about. Let me know how the dvla respond though. Thanks for the replies. Do you think an up to date mot would be enough? That would prove it's Road worthy. Rang up an insurance company today but have to ring back tomorrow for a quote will have to see what sort of price they come up with.
  5. Hello I recently put an ft500 engine in my cb250rs, does anyone know if on the insurance site the 'non standard engine' covers engine swaps or is it different standard engine internals that it covers? Also has anyone had any experience dealing with the dvla and telling them about engine swaps? Does it go very smoothly? Or can they be picky with information they need? Thanks.
  6. Hello, has anyone got a set of ft500 downpipes that they want to sell, I need a set for a cb250rs conversion but I can't find any. Thanks.
  7. Thanks for the tips, thought I put something together wrong.
  8. Yes it's that type now, just loosened the chain, undone the two front sprocket bolts, took the sprocket off the spindle and took the chain off.
  9. Hello, I took the rear wheel off my cb250rs to change the sprocket and chain, and clean the rear hub. I put it all back together, adjusted the chain and tightened the rear wheel nut up but as you tighten it up the chain tightens as well, does anybody have any ideas as to what it could be?
  10. Thanks, the seller sent me the proper link and it arrived today. I think you have to remove it, could you loosen the chain all the way and get the chain off the front speocket?
  11. Hello, I ordered a new x ring chain for my cb250rs, it was supposed to be a split link but a rivet link came with it. I am testing different speockets at the moment so I don't want to rivet it in at the moment, would it be possible to swap the rivet master link to a split link as long as it's still got o rings in it instead? The chain on it at the moment has a split link.
  12. could I have buggered the timing up by doing the tappets?
  13. Yep leads are on the right way. And when Turning the engine over you can use the nut with the timing mark on to get tdc can't you? And you have to make sure cylinder 2 and 3 are at tdc? because cyclinder 1 and 4 are at tdc at the same time.
  14. It is points. I read when you can wiggle the tappets you can adjust them. How do I make sure it's at the tdc?
  15. I lined the t marks up and wiggled the tappets and adjusted the ones that moved turned the timing mark over 360 degrees and adjusted the tappets that were left.
  16. Hello, I adjusted the tappets today all were ok-ish apart from one which hardly moved so I adjusted that one so it moved, put it all back together and it won't start, it turns over and backfired but that's it. Any help would be great.
  17. All of the plugs are a nice tan colour, I adjusted the air mixture so all of them are the same, it has stoped the bouncing of the revometer but is still jittery and it revs high when warm.
  18. Hello, I passed my bike test a couple weeks ago now, passed the mod 1 first time and mod 2 second time. I can finally ride my cb400f and it is a blast to ride, corners nicely and it is quicker than I thought it would be, it has got a short megaphone exhaust on it and it sounds brilliant. There is one problem with it, it idles ok when cool and the revometer is smooth but when it gets hot it idles high and the revometer goes jittery and bounces around and it is a bit harder to start. Does anyone know what it could be or what to check? Thanks.
  19. This is the paint I might use. http://i64.tinypic.com/34gshop.jpg They do a laquer as well.
  20. Balboo, I wasn't going to use silver aerosol paint. The only bits I will be painting is the front of the engine under the barrel and the bottom, the previous owner polished the casings (could have done better) but I quite like the look of it. He also painted the barrel I am not sure if I should paint it or get the rest of the paint off and give it a good clean. Any ideas?
  21. Forgot to mention I will use the stuff you brush on. Wouldn't you need to get all the paint off that is peeling off? And would the engine get any hotter if you put a couple of coats on?
  22. Hello, on my 400 four paint is peeling off parts of the engine. I was going to use carplan silver paint but the colour is slightly different to the paint that is on there at the moment. Does anybody know of a paint that matches the original colour better? Or have a better paint to recommend. Also would using wet and dry to clean/get it smooth be enough for the paint to stick? Thanks.
  23. Thanks for the replies. I could wear earplugs but I still want a helmet that is a bit quieter and the matt black s900 looks amazing. I have a shark s500 alpha at the moment and it gets noisy at about 40mph. What speeds do your helmets get noisy at?
  24. Hello everyone it's been a while since I posted but I have been lurking about. Since I posted I passed my CBT (back in July) will post some pics of my bike soon. My helmet is very noisy it fits ok but the wind gets in through the chin area and it gets very noisy. I want to get a new helmet but there are so many it's hard to start looking at what ones are decent. I am looking at spending up to £140. One helmet I do like the look of is the shark s700s, but there is the s900c as well don't know if there is much of a difference between them? Helmet preference would be full faced, pinlock comparable, low wind noise and Matt black. If anyone can suggest any helmets that would be great.
