    Oil

    Oil and the throttle action aren't connected - I take it it is the engine oil you are on about? Don't use cheap (especially car) oil in a bike. If your throttle is 'slipping' it must be something else. Is your grip secure? Throttle cable stretched/frayed? Clutch slipping? If you are using car oil it could be clutch issues as the additives in car oils cause damage to bike clutches (one's wet clutch the other dry clutch - i.e. one sits in the engines oil the other doesn't)

    She'll be right. You will just be listening more intently now you've had one problem. We all do it! Check Oil to satisfy yourself then get on with it!
  5. Well you seem to have plenty of recommendations! I swear by Hein Gericke kit, but have also used Dainese which has been excellent too. My advice would be spend as much as you can on the kit, the reason being the cheap stuff isn't breathable and makes you wet with sweat which in turn makes you cold. Budget £200-250 minimum
  6. Question of personal choice. I have an RX7-RR and a Corsair, both 'race' helmets and a Multitech 'touring' helmet. I wear ear plugs so noise isn't an issue. Air flow depends on vents so cooler helmets can be noisier and can those with fins and spoilers (which make them look good!) Tour helmets tend to be less flash in respect of bits on them hence potentially quieter. Personal choice though, and a good fit is better than a quiet lid
  7. Should be OK on any painted shell, F/glass, multi fibre etc, even painted poly, but not on unpainted poly - very bad idea!

They do 'off the shelf' or if you have awkwardfeet they do them bespoke too. Advantage is they keep the last and can remake a pair without refitting.   11. Used to be the dogs danglies - all the big riders went there in the 80/90s and the big Jap manufacturers used to use it to test special bits!
  12. Ride in rain to and from then at work. Rain riding makes you smoother and improves dry riding.

  15. Boots - only one I would recommend, Alt-Bergs. Never had so much as a drop of water penetrate them. Not as 'stylish' as other brands but do what they are meant to. They also have walking boot soles so are all day comfy even when off the bike, and because they aren't covered in plastic sliders and crap they are OK under jeans. Gloves - I have just found the best winter gloves ever! Wiese Oslo. Warm 100% waterproof, light weight and not bulky (has carbon knuckles!). As already stated, an oversuit would be cheapest option over normal leathers. If you are going to get textile kit, don't skimp and buy the Buster/M&P £20 specials. They don't breath like gore-tex/sheltex and will make you wet through sweat which in turn will make you cold. Heine Gericke are the best at a reasonable cost - take a look at the HG DAYLIGHT SHELTEX JACKET FLUORO YELLOW £149,99. Excellent piece of kit. If you already wear leathers then you could just get a decent pair of (gore-tex) walking over trousers (and jacket?) from Blacks or Millets. Alternatively get textiles which zip to a jacket with armour in them. You are looking at spending about £450-500 to get decent kit that will do what you want (doing the sort of riding you state is effectively professional riding) and the investment will be worth it in terms of comfort, security and longevity. I have worn HG kit for professional riding for nearly 7 years and (provided you remember to fasten the storm flap over properly so the zip is covered!) have never been wet throuh the worst of storms. I have worn the cheaper stuff and ended up wasting my money due to the reasons stated. To me the most important bits are boots and gloves - having had a broken ankle it is so debilitating and damaged hands can have life changing consequences.

  17. Sounds similar route to the one I did with RiDE mag (in this months) in 4 days! We did Millau first night, Spain second night, through Andorra and stopped in Toulouse on way back. Last day was just short of 900 miles though!     Which engine oil ?

    Check your manufacturers hand book for the correct oil grade. Get the one specific for your bike and don't worry too much about which brand - provided it is a branded oil.

  21. Sorry to contradict you, but that is not true. The simple act of dropping the helmet is enough to compress the inner liner, it does not need a head inside to do the damage. Some of the tests done at various factories show that the inner liner can be compressed by up to 30 - 35% over a wide area, which may not sound a lot, but is substantial when you need it to absorb impact in a real crash. Job then? TVP CIU? FYI I would recommend replacement as I alluded to in the last line you didn't quote!
  22. Can't agree with you there Scotty, I have had a Sheltex HG jacket (Daylite) for 6 years, used for work in all conditions through all seasons and have never reproofed it. It has never leaked/let water in. It's always the shoulder seams that leak first... Funny thing is, I've had my HG Shelltex jacket for nearly 4 years, and expect to get damp everytime I don't have a waterproof over jacket with me but, my £45 HG gloves seem to be 100% waterproof! Maybe HG have quality control issues and this is why we get differing experiences - I've always hated the zips on mine which jam regularly and leave me fighting to get my keys out of the pockets, whereas others have no problems with them. Bizarre. The chances of me buying another one are pretty slim - It doesn't help when the staff at the store have little or no interest in the customers! Got to agree with you about the zips - PITA! I have the Master IV, a black Voyager and another one which is suede and cordura (can't remember name!) All are waterproof, unless I forget to fasten the storm flap! We now use Halvarsson at work - jury out at the moment! Bootwise I cannot recommend Alt-Bergs enough though.I have 2 pairs, when one is being resoled wear other until (2-3 years later) they need resoling! 100% waterproof, comfy and strong!
