  1. yet another problem...bike has recently got very hard to start and whem giving it full throttle from idle it lets a big bang out of the carb and dies. what is this? lack of fuel or too much fuel? its a vl125 intruder btw
  2. So heres my new ride! my first foray into the bike world! And a cheap one at that! My friend advertised this on facebook for £150 had a bit of a chat about the bike. offered him 100 quid and to my surprise he took it! v5 and 2 keys present! It was in a bit of a state when i picked it up as it was sitting in a garage for 8 years sitting there doing nothing. Brakes seized. frame rusty in places. engine didnt run etc. anyways i decided to take a gamble and 40 quid later on odds and sods here and there like mirrors, indicators, brakes, spark plugs etc here it is today. just added a nice set of turn out exhausts too. makes it sound a lot more beefy! this its the bike after a good 3 hour clean today! its not ready for the road just yet as it needs a new chain and sprockets and a rear wheel bearing! http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww138/Seany205GTI/20160317_174215_zpsdly33omk.jpg http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww138/Seany205GTI/20160317_174139_zps71oiiimb.jpg http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww138/Seany205GTI/20160317_174149_zpsmekcien2.jpg what do we all think?? bear in mind this bike was only £100

  4. oil drained. it looked quite fine tbh. just a bit black and dirty. no emulsfied oil at all. just a bit the the air box and some by the oil level window. the oil level was a bit low. as around 1.2 litres came out when its meant tio take 1.8 litres. new oil and filter in so will take it for a good proper run tomorrow and see what happens! the bike is for its mot next tuesday after 8 years sitting in a garage. it took a bit of work to get everything back into working order but im getting there! having a bit of an issue with the carb atm. will only rev with very slight twist of the throttle. twist it all the way and it just dies out...lack of fuel or too much fuel.
  5. Found an issue today. Found that my oil is very creamy and milky. Drained the oil the find the oil is actually black but looking at the oil level window and in the air box there is a lot of milky substance. Also opening the oil filler while running there was loads of what I can only describe as steam. What's going on here?
  6. mines quite rusty too! i'm sure you would be as well after sitting for 8 years! but thankfully its on the road to recovery! its never going to be a showbike but a daily driver for me! just enough power to keep me happy!
  7. thank you kind sir! got the same bike i see! what exhausts are you running on your bike? standards or some nice turnouts?
  8. cheers for all the help guys!! new plug leads and plug caps on order!. new plugs in the bike today. runs like a dream now. need to sort out the pilot screw though. i dont know how many turns it should be. also need to adjust the accelerator pump slightly also. a bit jumpy on part throttle atm
  9. Finally got to the bottom of it the bike now runs sweet as a nut after a good run. A friend also suggested to me ht leads that could be shorting out on the body causing it to not spark. Found a bad ht lead. Cut it back a bit and tightly screwed it into the coil again. All back together with the air boxes back on and after a few turns of the starter it breathed into life only on the 1st cylinder though. A few pops and bangs later the 2nd cylinder finally burst into life completely changing the running of the bike. A good blast down my private Lane revving it the whole way up seemed to make things better. Probably a sticky valve as well. We'll anyways this problem has been sorted and the bike is going for its first mot in 8 years next week! Wish me luck!
  10. Will test ht leads and coils more thourghly later on
  11. When it does start on cylinder 1 it happily chugs away but as soon as I try to rev it. It dies
  12. Will try that! That would also cause hard starting/not starting and obviously the misfire yeah?
  13. Spark is coming from both coils though. Yeah a coil for each cylinder. Faulty ht lead which is shorting out against the body causing it to not spark for both??
  14. Not running on the 2nd cylinder but occasionally makes a few backfires pops and bangs. I also find that by disconnecting the power wire going to the front coil it starts easier
  15. Ok cleaned the carb and located all vacuum lines correctly. The bike is still very hard to start. I find that by keep hitting the starter button numerous times if fires up straight away. I can hear popping and back firing as if the 2nd cylinder wants to fire into life. Funny how though that the starter button needs loads of little pushes for it to start
  16. Where would I check for vacuum problems. How many vacuum lines are there. I don't know where the mixture screws are. Is the mixture screw covered by a small plastic blanking plug? I'm not really used to carbs only really fuel injection
  17. How does the carb be set back to factory settings?
  18. bike is very hard to start also. takes piles of cranking and several twists of the throttle to even get it to run and even if that it gives a few pathetic splutters.
  19. tried that eariler. plug still not getting fuel. surely the plug would be soaked with fuel if it was being fed correctly?
  20. single carb and 2 coils. just found a split in the inlet manifold. its rubber and its on the cylinder that not firing. cant see if its completely split but could be an issue. havent got a compression tester but im sure the cylinder itself is fine
  21. Not yet checked compression. But there seems to be some there. Can feel it against the exhaust. I don't think the front cylinder is being fed fuel. As I pulled a brand new plug out of it and it was not wet and doesn't look like it's been firing. Any chance the carb could be feeding the rear cylinder and not the front one? So as far as vacuum lines go. One from the fuel tap going to the inlet one from the fuel tap going to the fuel pump. One vacuum line going to the left airboX and another going to nowhere as I can't find where it goes. Sticky valve or jet or float bowl in the carb? Also the bike is very hard to start.
  22. The vacuum is on the back of the fuel tap yeah going to the middle of the inlet. This line has like a spring covering the line itself. The second line going to the fuel pump is to the right of the fuel tap. If so this is correct. I do have one vacuum line though that I can't find where it goes? Goes onto the side of the carb on the left hand side of the engine. Looks like a vacuum line.
  23. Quite a weird one this. Bike runs but only on the rear cylinder. I had the fuel tank off the thing and not sure i've located the vacuum and fuel lines correctly. Bike will run with the choke on but won't rev I have to twist the throttle lot of times to get it to rev. Any one got any suggestions. Both plugs are sparking.
