So there's not enough space between the pads to get it over the disc? Have you pushed the pistons all the way back in before putting the new pads on?

Don't worry about anything else until you've stuck a new battery in, if it still don't work then look at other possible causes.

I seee, what's stopping him just clamping the two ends together with something to seal them without chopping them up, the mounting point for the silencer?

Is the difference quite large or minimal? If it's pretty close you might be able to get them in by taking some off with some wet & dry.
