As Mr W said, the tins that you can buy now are far better than they used to be and you should be able to come up with an acceptable brew quite quickly and cheaply. If you want to create your own micro brewery in the kitchen, the best book on the subject is Home Brewing by Graham Wheeler. There's a second hand copy on Amazon at the moment for 1p (plus postage) ! I met him once, quite unassuming but very knowledgeable.
