    You'll be fine. Give yourself a bit of time to get used to the additional weight, you won't notice it once you're moving but the slower speed stuff may feel a bit cumbersome at first. But as long as you don't grab the front brake and keep slipping the clutch the bike won't fall.


    Have you got any experience with manual transmission on a bike? You'll pick it up soon enough if not, but just let the clutch out nice and slow from a standing stop and you'll be grand 🙂

    Hi all, forgot to mention. Yes I am 16 so 50cc is the best I can get. I'll de-restrict it when i'm 17 because I think going too slow is a bit dangerous because i've seen people get annoyed and pull infront of people who are going slow.

     

    Yes but try to remember that's a problem with them, not you. Don't let it put you off! You have a lot of learning to do and hopefully it's the start of a lovely [strikeout]money pit[/strikeout] passion

    Short of a dam bursting unexpectedly so it was inches when you started crossing you wouldn't ever attempt this would you....


    The only positive I could take was that I think his top box stayed dry.

    I thought that was relatively common for a pay monthly option. It is effectively finance. Mobile phone contracts will also usually leave a record on your credit search.

  4. Still not sure why GoPro stopped producing the Hero Session. Completely different shape and fully waterproof without a case.

     

    Did they not have issues with the battery? I'm sure I read that they were failing and the battery in the session wasn't changeable which meant the camera was scrap once the battery died....

     

    I only have a sample size of one, my trusty first gen that I've had for over four years. The battery life has definitely reduced but it still works.

    First year is expensive (when I totted mine up it came as a bit of a shock!) but when it comes to kit I suggest trying everything on with an open mind then consider cost. You can easily buy twice if you scrimp first time round. However the the Richa textiles I got a few years ago for the best part of £500 still serve me well and I think they will for years to come.


    When you first get on a bike, even a 125, the additional weight (especially being high up) may throw you if you're used to road bikes. It did for me. I also had to learn to keep power on in bends, compared to road bikes where you mostly disengage drive (by not pedalling) when you corner.


    Based on where you are, have a look at https://roadcraftnottingham.co.uk/. Even if you don't train with him check his youtube channel out. Whoever you consider enquire now as they'll have a backlog due to the lack of testing.


    The advice on insurance is sound but in my experience at your age if you get a bike that's renowned for being a 'newbie' bike you won't pay much.

  6. If you ever get involved in cycle campaigning you'll know how laughable it is when it's claimed you're a "powerful lobby".


    Actually what you've got there as a consultation reply could have easily been written in response to a cycling campaign or initiative.


    For whatever reasons doing anything on the roads always seems to add up quick, whether it's consultations, publishing the TROs and changing the signs (plus I think all the plans need to go through lots of 'officers' to ensure that all the plans, paint and signs meet regs)


    You'd assume they could just stick a picture of a motorbike on the existing blue signs but what do we know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯


    (The idea that loads of people were going to look at a motorcyclist zipping past them during the trial period and think "ooh, what a good idea, must do my CBT is an odd one. If that was one of the success criteria then the trial was always doomed to failure. Research has shown that many people only switch modes of transport - especially for a commute - during a major life event, such as a change of job, location, divorce etc. Not a bus lane trial)

  7. I've seen this one before. It's the fault of the following rider.


    It may not have been a copper there, it could have been a sheep. A queue around that corner. A car that crashed. A motorcyclist in the road.


    The conditions are atrocious.


    The first guy sees the copper and slows with zero drama.


    Then in comes the following rider. Count the following distance (there's a few reference points you can do this). At MOST he's two seconds behind... in those conditions.


    It takes him a few seconds to react and then panic grabs. We can all do it, but the clusterfuck he's got himself into means it's the panic grab that kicks in.


    His footage shows he had all the room (and time) in the world to swerve.


    Then there's the second following guy. Who save what looks like a small rear lock up towards the end of his stop comes to a halt well before the collection of riders in front of him.


    Anyone blaming the copper has to ask why two of the riders failed to stop and the middle didn't.

    I've heard good things about their templates, including the store type templates. You can build something as a trial before committing.

    If you're struggling it sounds like they'll struggle, and in my experience they'll be pretty unmotivated to deal with what they'll perceive as any struggle

    • Was sent to work from home by my employer before it became cool to do so
    • Didn't go to the supermarket in months
    • Already reasonably fit and healthy, but started a new exercise routine for my own mental health and to give me some structure from the boredom, and became leaner and fitter than before lockdown
    • Even one of the cats who can't stand me seemed to grow affectionate towards me and tolerate my presence

  9. It's amazing how cheap people will go on a bike. I get two very bad questions, both of which I now give very blunt answers to and wince as soon as they're asked of me:


    1) I've seen this bike for £100, will it be any good?

    2) I want to buy a bike, what should my budget be?


    For one, the answer is always no. They'll of course say "But I'm not sure if I'm going to get into it yet/I only want to use it at the weekend to go down the towpath and if I enjoy it I'll spend some more later" etc. But they're going to get some heavy crap that will never shift gear properly, simply put they'll never want to ride it. I always ask them to mentally tot up all the bits on a bicycle they can think of and try to attribute some form of monetary value on each of them... then try and think how vastly different it is to that £100 figure


    Two is always dangerous because no matter what figure I'll give, I'll get a response like "oh wow, is that for both me and my partner?" (because they inevitably want to get one each, and seemed to think they could spend £150)


    There's a really good charity here that gets homeless people to refurbish donated bikes under the tutelage of qualified bike mechanics, the idea being they learn some skills that can help them find employment. I always try to send people there. They won't be far off their budget and get a serviced and very workable bike that someone with an actual bit of knowledge would have helped them choose. But I can almost certain guarantee they'll still buy the piece of crap they first asked me about, because it's a "new bike".


    If they do really really want new I try and at least up their budget to a basic Carrera from Halfords, which should usually be serviceable. Shame they are usually looking at a bike from Asda or Sports Direct. (Extra hilarity points when they then need to build bits of it when it arrives).

     



    I disagree with 1, I bought a second hand Scott , £500 worth, the fella had been out on it twice and it had sat in his garage for 6 months gave him £100 ...... Now it's sitting in my garage gathering dust :D

    plenty of second hand bargains out there , cause people buy them brand new then don't ride them .

     

    I'm talking new. I could make a killing* buying underpriced second hand bikes and yours is a perfect example. But loads of people want "new" and still think they can spend a hundred quid doing so


    * This only holds true if I need the bike myself. You couldn't make a living doing it because like I said, people think they want new.
