  1. https://www.whatcar.com/news/who-has-right-of-way-at-slip-roads/n10633 The above article explains that vehicles joining motorway from slip road have to give way to vehicles already on motorway. Today a van joins from the slip road right into the side of me. I had to swerve to avoid collision. I knew well in advanced this could happen. He had his indicator on and his speed suggested he'd reach the end of the slip road just as i was passing it. However the highway code says i have right of way and adjusting my speed could be dangerous. This guy assumed id slow down to let him in because thats the cultral norm the UK (or change into middle lane). Im just wondering what you would all do in this situation? FYI 9 times out of 10, i would have slowed down because my biker 6th sense knew this was gonna happen and it was safe for me to slow down (motorway was empty) but today I was curious to see how the situation would unfold knowing the risk but also knowing i had right of way.
  2. Very sound advice. Thanks all. My take away from this expierance is to not go for the gaps. If i could do that situation again i would of stayed in left lane longer and waited for both cars in right lane to pass. Then only when its clear do i move over. I think the fact that i needed to accelate into a new position was a red flag. I agree on shoulder check. It saved my life recently on a road merge. An old lady undertook me and was in my blind spot. The traffic has been weird last couple days....
  3. I think i made the right decision since there was sufficent gap at the time, and the whole point of me moving into right lane was because i was overtaking. A part of me felt that quickly cutting back into left lane without having a few second to assess the situation would have been unsafe. I might of rear ended the car in the left lane.
  4. Riding down 2 lane motorway, i was in left lane doing 65mph, and waited for car on right to overtake so i could move into right lane. As the car passed me i increased my speed to 70mph so i can slot in behind him. I indicated and began my menevour as soon as he passed however i noticed a second car behind in the right lane starting to increase their speed. My gut reaction was to stop my manevour ( i was already inbetween lanes) and go back into left lane however i decided to commit to the manuver. The car behind continued to increase their speed until we were both almost side by side...in the same lane. Luckily our vehicles didnt touch overwise id likely by RIP. The driver then slowed right down to less than 60mph.
  5. Thanks for advise billy. Its not slipping into third though, it stays in 2nd. And cant go higher. I find that if i quickly open and close the throttle a few times it temp solves the issue. I know the issue is solved because there is residence again when i apply upward pressure in the foot change lever. Do you still reckon its a worn selector/slots? The slack chain comment is interesting, ive been meaning to tighten my chain now for a few weeks as its defo slack
  6. Lately my bike has been acting up. In the morning ill get on, go into 1st then 2nd gear no problem, but then when i attempt to shift into third gear there is no resistence against my left foot from the shifter when i nudge up. Normally id expect a small residence then a click indicating a succesful gear change. I thought maybe the clutch plates were sticking lately due to it being warmer air temp? The problem does eventually go away, but returns each morning. Thoughts?
  7. Risk versus perceived risk is a funny thing. we freak out about plane crashes where a few 100 die and survivors have life changing injuries. and effectively ignore the 73 who suffer the same fate every day of the week on the roads. There was a radio 4 program several years ago on this subject and looking at all the statistics for accidental death, by far and away the most dangerous time for individuals is that short period between the alarm going off next to the bed and the first step into the street for the journey to work. More people die during that period of time than at any other time of the day. electrocution by the alarm. slipping in the bedroom/bathroom/stairs. Choking on breakfast. etc etc etc. All accidents are 'freak' accidents and all you can do is reduce the risk. a good start is not getting out of bed. interesting post, but i wouldnt agree these are freak accidents. Sounds more like lack of concentration due to being tired.
  8. the incident was picked up by the local news https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/17659085.emergency-services-at-scene-of-crash-on-m65-close-to-guide/ Good job he didn't die at the scene, I really couldn't tell. there was a crowd of people. Someone was trained because they didn't remove the helmet and risk further injury and put the man in the recovery position.
  9. Happened right here where that red car is. must of happened about 30 seconds before i got there judging by traffic. https://www.google.com/maps/@53.7246576,-2.4439755,3a,75y,297.73h,72.04t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s_jXbmEKFlr71U0Qfd0NmMg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 The motorbike was going in the direction heading towards the roundabout. He was lying middle of the road unconscious, helmet still on. bike destroyed. Im guessing he rear-ended someone.
  10. I dont understand, how does a bike have 3 locks? Best thing to do is to dismantle it and sell parts on ebay. It will take time but you could fetch well over a thousand.
  11. Has any police officer been disciplined? Last I read into it there were investigations. I doubt anything will come of it, it would be a public relations nightmare. Police are 100% supported on this.
  12. I get so angry these people intentionally put my life in danger so they can feel something. If they get away with it, they can do it to others.
  13. Wondering is it possible? Today was doing 50MPH in 50MPH zone and was in slowest lane. Guy fast approaches from behind doing 70MPH, then tailgates me with around 2 metres gap! then does a close overtake into middle then slow lane to end up infront of me. The whole situation was bizare because we were the only two on the road, so he could of moved over the fast lane at any time, but he intentionally came really close. he didnt use indicators either. Unfortunately my helmet camera wasn't on at the time, however if it was, how do i report someone for dangerous driving?
  14. Says alot about our broken insurance system when we're forced to pay it but dont use it when we're meant too.
  15. I can relate, I started riding again last year and bought 125cc. I had to ride home 30miles having just passed by CBT. However i didnt take into consideration crossing over some of the highest peaks in the UK. I was getting blown left and right by the wind whilst on these small twisty roads high up in the hills. Scary!!
  16. That is harsh. On my daily commute there is a road with lots of parked cars on the left which also hides a side road. I often ride slow and in the middle of the road so cars coming from that side road can see my approach and not pull out on me. Isnt there a rule anyways that says you gotta be a certain distance from parker car incase car door opens etc? I remember being taught this during my mod2 training. Im sure i was taught going over white line was safe to do so and if uncoming traffic came then i was move in to the left. But then if i move back into the left I wouldnt stop (would cause hazzard), id just drive very slow. So maybe then by that logic, if its safe to drive slow next to parked cars, then that should be done in preference to going over the white line. I dont agree with it, but the instructor knows more than me
  17. That's a bloody good idea that, what else could be removed and put back on easily?? main fuse.
  18. I suspect this law was brought in to close a loophole wheby people purposely didn't get insurance and if anyone asks they could just say they didn't drive it. And so the only way they would get caught is in the act. With this law, the DVLA and the police can now catch you, meaning less uninsured drivers in the road. This, in theory, protects you from being hit by an uninsured driver.
  19. I read an article by an ex Motorbike thief. He said most thieves who use vans get caught eventually, whereas its much safer for them to just ride away. When they use a van it's riskier for them especially if the bike has GPS tracking history. Police can use that to compare public CCTV camera footage. If the thief is using a stolen van then the van itself becomes risky to use.
  20. Did you read my earlier response? The police arent bothered, so you just need to call your insurance company now and found out for certain how the lack of MOT affects the claim. Do it now rather than later so your insurance company can look into it and help you and themselves out. If the third party insurance company can use this against you, then trust me they will.
  21. Contact your insurance company and ask them if your vehicle not having MOT is a factor in the claim. Your instance company is on your side as they would prefer it if the third party's insurance company had to pay the claim. Also remember you can check MOT here for free: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/
  22. BECAUSE the you was warned that somthi g was about to happen . If you had not been told before hand you would have just been riding along . I would have hit her again stupid woman surprised she lived as long as she has due to her stupidity at crossing roads .. No actually I'm rather observent and have to look out for this sort of thing for a minimum of 10 hours a day 4 days a week! 10 hours a day? are you a bike instructor?
  23. Desperate indeed , that's a hidiously styled bike . I actually think it looks quite stylish!
  24. I remove the foot lever from my bike in addition to chaining it and covering it. If they managed to get through my £100 chain, they have no choice but to push it away. Then my GPS/RF tracker kicks in and i get a phone call.
  25. It had an alarmed disc lock and an oxford chain around the back tire. They only left a chain loop that they saw through. I wanted to put a tracking device on it but thought I spend the money for that on my new bike. Boo me. I guess when they make the decision to take a bike they do so no matter what. I'm just glad they didn't take it whilst I was on it. That would have been worse. Indeed, there is silver lining in all of this. Firstly it's making me walk more so I'm getting fit. Secondly, I should get more motivated to pass my full test. Thirdly, I end up with an upgraded bike without the pain of selling the other one. I hope I can report back during the summer to say I have passed MOD1 which oxford chain was it?
