Thankfully I am lucky enough to only ride motorcycles for pleasure and my heart goes out to anyone who has to ride a bike out of necessity . I'm only putting my ER5 back on the road so that I can scratch the itch to ride a bike over the next six months should the weather permit .

I'm like you, riding for pleasure, it is a little hairy getting the bike out as we have a gravel type of drive. But as soon as i am on the road it's like i am 20 again, same really as i'm 72

I do remember going for a ride one evening on my first bike, been out for about an hour and a half, came to a stop put my feet down and fell over. Could not feel my legs from the knees down, funny now but not then.

 

Ditto, rode home from my GF's place after midnight one January back in 1979 wearing ordinary jeans. When I got home about an hour later I couldn't get off the bike except by sliding backwards off the seat and then found my legs weren't working properly. The pain when the circulation returned was a little bit eyewatering. Thank god for modern technical clothing!

Never had pain in the legs, they just didn't work lol. I have had pains in the fingers, it was excruciating as they came to.

Don't ride in the winter, end of. Yea i know some of you will say i am not a true biker and all that shit. However i did my winter riding time when i was younger, rain, hail, 6 inches of snow, day in day out to go to work, that was normal. Have to say the best time of all was with an outfit in the snow, great fun.

Now though it has to be dry and warm.

 

Exactly! We had to do it......no choice!

Usually in a greasy Belstaff that covered you in black marks.......and "waterproof" gloves and boots that weren't.

The worst bit was the sponge on your goggles getting drenched and compressing the cold water onto your face!

No inclination to go through that shit again!

Slacken the cable right off and adjust the clutch push rod or what ever actuates the actual clutch pressure plate, then adjust the cable leaving about 3mm at the clutch cable as free play.

Well, it came about after a friend was pushing a broken down motorcycle to a safe place.

It was taxed, insured and MOT'd.

Police officer stopped and told him he should be wearing his helmet and it must be done up regardless of the engine running or not.

In this case it clearly wasn't running as it couldn't run!

Hence, we looked it up and couldn't find a ruling anywhere!

So went to the legislation and assume the copper has got it wrong!

I have heard of Police saying this and making a complete nuisance of themselves. At the end of the day he's a cop and he can make your life difficult should he choose.

What really intrigues me is that Sikh's do not have to wear a helmet because of their religion ( i am not being racist in any way here) Some of our laws are a thing of wonder.

They were Harley Gloves, nice soft leather and good padding. I chose battery ones over hard wired. They were just over £200.00

Remove the oil filler cap and take a sniff, is it the same smell? When a clutch burns out it really does stink.

I kind of agree in principle as if you an engineer you get a 'feel' as to how tight a bolt it getting. BUT, someone new to bikes may well really swing on a 6mm bolt going into aluminium. They are not animals they just have not learnt to feel.

Another thing to consider is the amount of times a bolt has been removed when going into aluminium, the bolts will never wear out but the aluminium will.

I bought a pair of heated gloves a few years ago, they functioned fine except for one the heated part of the finger was on the outside of the glove. they were useless. I sent the back and purchased another pair where the heated part was on the inside of the fingers and hand, they were perfect, best pait of gloves i ever had.

Cheers for that, makes sense that you have to show you are capable of controlling your bike.

I have ridden thousands of bikes, literally. Getting on "new" bike is always strange for the first ten minutes but it soon becomes part of you. Don't try and find max acceleration or max speed. Go for rides out just to become part of your bike, soon you will feel at home and learn about it.

Just enjoy the ride, and watch out for idiotic car drivers.

Can someone tell me what space this should be done in please and what size bikes are used. A friend failed his test on this and i want to help him out if i can.

I never did this on my test in 1967, the examiner used to walk round, in fact i lost him for about 10 mins then saw him flapping his arms at the side of the road.

First off i worked at an Insurance for about ten years, not in the insurance side of it but we had our monthly meetings and it was very enlightening.

They put up their insurance quotes every year as there is ALWAYS some who will just cough up as it it the easy way to go. They rely on that.

If you go to a compare site get a quote and contact your existing insurance company and ask if they match quotes you have got online. You will be surprised how much they drop their previous quote!!

If they don't just tell them they have lost a customer, it will be their loss not yours. They do not do you any favours after all.
