  1. I've looked at a few. I honestly really love the style of the older superbikes. Certainly 2001-2006 bikes to me look fantastic. The only thing that does put me off getting something like that is the commute to work. Its 30 miles and into central Manchester so want something that's comfortable if I'm honest. I'm just not that clued up on nakeds of that era
  2. I have been looking at 2017 Street Triple RS and that is in some cases £1000 less to insure. Guess bike value is less but seems kind of crazy. Looking at some of the good deals you can get on used bikes in general makes me wonder why I've been looking at new bikes so much. For less than say new MT09 I can get a really good low mileage RS. That would be incredible as RS has been my dream bike for years While it may be your dream bike you should be cutting your teeth on something older and cheaper Yeah I do get that. As I've said I'll have a look at a few different bikes. I do have the confess I am the kind of person that is enticed by shiny new things

  4. Been looking at a few cheaper options. Just trying to put a list together now!
  5. Thanks very much for advice. Looked at compare the market and actually seem cheaper. Only £100 or so off but still! I entered office manager as job which is true but what makes me wonder if insurance is higher is the industry I put down - retailing. I work for a supermarket but it's in their head office, not in store. Don't know if it makes any difference. Ironically at work motorbikes can park in underground car park.
  6. Will have a look at CBR600RR. Been looking at R6's and they're still £800. I should have mentioned that I have a chinese 125 that I had from having my first CBT in 2014. Got that insured again end of last year so building no claims on that. I think my insurance area is pretty high. I live in a safe area but it's not from rough areas and the main road between Liverpool and Manchester isn't far so I guess that adds risk
  7. Thanks. Trying to have a look at a few now to get an idea of some ones I could get. I had looked at something like an '04 R6 that was just over £3k with 9k miles. That was £800 to insure TPFT so still expensive as others but less money to lose if I crash. R6 is probably a bit much for first big bike though!
  8. So after passing my test in January, I've been saving up with the plan to get a bike this summer. Covid-19 hit which has given me time to spend on working out full costs of each bike I'm looking at. My shortlist was: Yamaha MT09 Triumph Street Triple RS BMW F900R Street Triple RS was always going to be a big push for bike alone and had looked at R but do wonder whether I'll always feel like I'm missing out with the R after test riding the RS. So began to work out insurance for each of the 3 when I had a garage. Was about £1.5k for each but RS was most expensive. Despite being most powerful . Oh yes and 2020 R was £2.5k. How does that work? Anyway I've now had to move and new place doesn't have a garage. Long story but covid restrictions meant I couldn't view more than 2 places before lockdown and both had no garages so have had to go with one of them as need a place. Unfortunately but not surprisingly insurance has gone up to £2k for F900R, £2.5k for MT09 and I'm uninsurable on the RS. The R is also £3k to insure. So it was back to looking at used bikes. Using the MT09 as an example I can get a 2017 model insured for about £1.5k comprehensive. That's the cheapest I've got out of the 3 I'm looking at as used (obviously the F900R is a new model. I hate the F800R by the way!) That made me look at Third Party Fire and Theft and that brings down quotes to below £1k. A 2017 RS is £800 and 2017 MT09 is £650. I am really wary of getting only TPFT on a used bike but just can't see how I can get my first big bike if I don't get TPFT or by getting an older lower powered bike. Would be good if anyone has any thoughts on this. Also may be a stupid question but say over a 5 year period are your insurance quotes more likely to come down with fully comp policy or a TPFT? Thanks
  9. Thanks all. Really helpful stuff. Test rode the new BMW F900R today at BMW Chester. Enjoyed it, however I think I prefer the sound of a triple to be honest. Although I found the F900R very smooth to ride and fun accelerating. Top range wasn't as good as a MT09 or Street Triple but still liked it. I did find the wind better on the F900R than the MT09. The MT09 is lower down on the front I guess but it was quite bad. Appreciate it's a naked so its never going to be great but just with my plan to commute on it, it would be good if I could keep it down as much as possible. Really difficult decision. Got test rides coming up with Kawasaki, Ducati and KTM soon so will see what they're like
  10. Thanks very much. Really helpful stuff. I've been down there twice now and 2nd time was for a test ride and they've been great. Person I've been dealing with has been great and not pushing me to rush into buying a bike at all. Basically my top two bikes currently are MT09 and Street Triple RS. They do both so it makes it more simple from that point of view
  11. Yes, they have been around for a while. Good point!
  12. Hi All, Sorry if this is in wrong place but been looking at my first big bike and got down to 3 potential dealers to buy from. They are: - Bill Smith Motors, Chester - CMC Motorcycles, Manchester - Youles Motorcycles, Manchester Just wanted to see if anyone has dealt with any of these? Good to get an idea on how they are post sale, service costs, parts etc. Thanks Mark
  13. Hi All, So I passed my Mod 2 last Wednesday! Anyway I've been trying to whittle down the list of the bikes I'd consider to about 3 or 4. I looked at Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki but nothing stood out to me. So I'm down to the following: - Yamaha MT09 or MT09 SP - Yamaha MT07 - BMW F900R - Triumph Street Triple S or Street Triple RS I'm trying to set up test rides for them but also just wanted to get some advice on them. Appreciate that F900R isn't out yet but just some advice on generally how people have found these models/manufacturers in the past. Things like reliability, running costs, riding quality etc. would be really helpful but just any feedback. I had considered the KTM Duke 790 but the dealerships are far away in either Stoke or Blackburn so not sure whether its worth w trip up there. Thanks Mark
  14. I used a ER6N. Depends by school. Seen some use MT07 and other use the CB650? Honda bike. As others say instructors help you get used to bike and allow you as much time as you need. When I went from a 125 to the ER6N I was worried I was going to crash it but I was fine. I actually found it easier to ride and on the road you feel a lot safer and it's the 125 that is a bit awkward to ride and can actually be dangerous in certain situations.
  15. Thanks for your help All! I passed!!! Just one minor which was hesitation overtaking this Tractor. It was a really unfamiliar road. I did overtake it in the end but for too long I was going at most 30mph in a 40 so it was an absolutely fair minor. Such a good feeling to be fully licensed now!
  16. Hi, so I've got my mod 2 in 2 weeks time. Does anyone have any link to a website where it explains how the test is conducted in a simple way as possible? Just want to be sure if you're asked to do things like u turns etc. I know you do these in your mod 1. From what I can see you only have to do pulling in and out from kerb. Is that correct? Also, could do with seeing what types of majors you can get. For example going over a flat mini roundabout a major. I didn't realise that. I did it on my lesson right at the start as I wasn't concentrating properly. Any help would be appreciated. Mark
  17. Yeah thanks. Put it in my jacket pocket. Didn't pass. Did everything perfectly but nerves made me put my foot down. No minors just that one serious fault of putting my foot down in the slalom. It was just nerves. I did it perfect in practice everytime. But went to wide on the day. Will have to try again
  18. To carry it to the test centre I mean. Its impractical to carry it in a plastic wallet to the test centre
  19. So I have my Mod 1 tomorrow. Anyway just realised I never asked my instructor how to bring my documents e.g. licence, cbt etc. with me to test centre. I currently have it all in plastic wallet but obviously that's not practical. How have you guys done it in the past? Thanks
  20. Okay thanks very much. Yeah, I just wondered as it's a new bike that's competing against so many established bikes in the market. March would be a perfect date as I'd be looking to get it around that time
  21. Does anyone know when the F900R will be released? Also, is it a direct replacement for the F800R? Finally, do Manufacturers ever do 0% finance for a brand new bike or not. Thanks
  22. Okay thanks. Yes, did look at HP or loan. Definitely realistic options.
