    bike died

went out for a run yesterday, got about 30 miles into the country and at 50mph the bike died, i don't mean cut out i mean died. everything, no electrics, nothing. managed to pull up ok (had swmbo on back). turned ignition off then back on again, nothing, no lights, no LED display nada. did this a couple of times then got all lights etc back on. however, it would turn over fine, but not fire up. so had to call BMW breakdown and get them to arrange recovery to my local BMW dealers. all in all over 3 hours stuck in the middle of nowhere, wind howling and no shelter. lovely ride out. got to wait for a call to see what problem is. so glad it is still under warranty. and got my new comfort seat coming today
  2. seems to be running ok at the mo. think it might have been a bit dampness. have given it another good spray of wd40. got to let it stand until next weekend so will see how it goes then.
  3. thanks. have ordered one for the missus too, wonder if they'll send two to the same address?
  4. hmm, sons gs125 been standing for a couple of months, well covered but outside. went to start it up and it would turn but not fire. did the usual, charged battery, put new petrol in, good spark from plug, deffo petrol getting through as plug wet. anyway, bought a new plug and hey presto, fired up first turn. ran it for about 10 mins no problems. took it fora run but only got to the bottom of the street and it died, i don't mean stalled i mean dead, no electrics, no neutral light or horn, nothing. pushed it back into the yard and took my gear off, pushed starter and up it fired again. so chanced it and took it for a 20 mile run down the A19, was whizzing down all ok. got to a mates and parked up for a few hours, then started off home again, got a mile down the road and it did it again this time lights came back on and as i let clutch back out it fired up and off i went. did that twice in a matter of 5 mins then fine for the rest of the journey home. sorry it's long winded. any ideas?
  5. congrats and best of luck for mod 2
  6. technically 2-r1200rt and suzuki gs125 (but bought for son)
  7. just bought a RKSport three layer jacket, but yet to try it out in the rain. i have another waterproof RKSport jacket and it is fab, don't even need the thermal lining in yet. but it is hot in the summer, so reason for buying a new one with removable thermal and waterproof linings and lots of vents. and to be honest, at about £80 they are as good as ones twice the price.
  8. bought a pair of these yesterday. any one had any dealings with them. they fit well, look good, feel unbelievably warm and got them for £80, that's 20% off.
  9. as the title says. looking for a new jacket, touring style. last year i went touring in Scotland and was sweating like the proverbial pig in temps of around 30C, yes, i said 30C. don't want this to happen this year. but as we all know, the weather changes so much in the UK what do i get. I've seen a few jackets with removable separate thermal and waterproof linings, but have no experience in how good they are. budget is not huge, about £150
  10. is it for rider to pillion or rider to rider? I've been using the cardo scala teamset pro for rider to pillion for a couple of years now and find it very good for the money.
  11. got to say from an engineering point of view it looks amazing. very well made and superbly finished off. however, not my cup of tea, just doesn't seem to look right with the bike. i almost bought a GSF1250 and liked the Suzuki luggage that was fitted. but still well done.
  12. relax, they are not out to fail you, just to make sure you can handle the bike. listen to the instructions carefully, it's easy to misunderstand when you are worked up and the adrenaline is pumping. above all else, enjoy it. and good luck
  13. lol. just had the bike serviced and found an additional bill for two new rear indicator lights. apparently i have been indicating too much and bleached the amber bulbs white
  14. you can buy them from BMW, but you need to sell a kidney first. i'm sure other mirrors will fit, it's just finding the right ones.
  15. hmm, think that's what you would call what i'm looking for. it's for the little Suzuki gs 125 i bought my son. the grips are small and hard, so was looking for something i could put over them rather than the rigmarole of taking the old ones off etc. think the bars a 7/8". i thought about the grip puppies, but i use them and think they would be too big to go on and be tight enough to be safe. any ideas. have seen lots of foam grips you can use to replace but none to go over?
  16. anyone??
  17. What about where you bought it from???? That was the first place they rang. But he was told he would have to take it down to them.
  18. anyone know anything about these things. my nephew bought a new one a few weeks ago and has now been told it has a restrictor on for the first 250 miles. since he bought it a few hundred miles away he now can't find anyone local who knows how to remove the restricor. any ideas guys.
  19. well, passed MOT with no advisories, however on the way home it was running very lumpy, which it wasn't. I'm thinking muck in the carb?. I'm reluctant to touch it as i have no idea what to do. any thoughts. was thinking of using some carb cleaner or redex.
  20. latest update. bike is now ready for the MOT this week. have replaced fork oil, but seals intact. new gators, new front brake calliper (old one was knackered), new one only £45 complete. rear shocks changed, clutch adjusted, full service done. not done anything cosmetic until we know it is road worthy. not ticking over very well at the moment, but think it is the carb, going to try some redex before i start mucking about with it. had it up the road (private one of course) and it pulls well in all gears, however front brake very soft, hope it is just needing to bed in a bit (fluid changed). so fingers crossed.
  21. wow, it is indeed a very nice bike, but i had a problem with the weight, which is why i got the BMW. look forward to seeing some pics.
  22. Can you take photo's of the caliper...what's wrong with it? looks like someone has tried to work on it before and made a real mess, the piston is scored and a bit rusty, the pin is bent, the seal, well there wasn't one and my local guy says it is a bit 'floppy'. the pads point outwards at the front so only the back of them actually hits the disc. so we think it will be best to get another one.
  23. bit stuck on a calliper at the moment. none of the local breakers or parts shops have one in. seen a pattern one on eBay but it doesn't say what years it covers, have message seller but no reply. any ideas guys. oh, also snapped the clutch lever, but looks like it was not an original gs 125 part, so off to hunt for one of them too.
  24. update. so far so good. managed to pick up a pair of rear shocks for £15, in pretty good nick too. also got usual service items, oh, some gaiters, clutch cable and rear indicators. only problem now is the front brake calliper, looks shot, so on the hunt for one. going to do service today or tomorrow, then change the parts. and if i can get a calliper i might even try and get it MOT'd next week (after we have a few days in Scotland).
